Nokia's Refocus app makes its way to Lumia PureView devices

Nokia's Refocus Windows Phone application is now available, the company announced on Wednesday.

Microsoft's Windows Phone store is offering the free app, which allows users to snap a photo and then adjust the depth of field -- in other words, choose which parts of the image are clear and which segments are out of focus. The application also includes support for "Color Pop," a feature that allows users to turn on color in one section of the image and turn the rest of it to black-and-white.

Android dominates 81 percent of world smartphone market

For the first time ever, Android has hit more than 80 percent market share for smartphone shipments worldwide.

The new Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker was released on Tuesday by IDC, which detailed third-quarter numbers for all smartphone shipments worldwide. A total of 261.1 million smartphones were shipped during this quarter, 81 percent of which run Google's operating system. A study by Strategy Analytics last month revealed nearly the same numbers, showing that Android gobbled 81.3 percent of the global smartphone market in the third quarter.

Nokia Lumia 1520 now up for preorder via AT&T, Microsoft

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is now officially available for preorder through both AT&T and Microsoft with a launch date of November 22.

AT&T's preorder page shows the phone selling for $199 with the standard two-year contract, $584 with a month-to-month plan, or $27 per month for 20 months through the carrier's Next installment plan. The Lumia 1520 is available in red, black, white, and yellow. AT&T is also accepting preorders in-store and promises a ship date of November 19.

Elop could sell Xbox biz, focus on Office as Microsoft CEO -- report

Stephen Elop has major plans in store for Microsoft if he's appointed chief executive, according to a new report.

Elop, who is resigning as Nokia's CEO and will head a new devices-focused division at Microsoft when Nokia's Devices operation is finally sold off to Microsoft, could decide to sell off the software company's Xbox division if he becomes CEO, Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of his thinking. Elop would also consider ending Microsoft's Bing search engine.

Nokia Lumia 1520, 2520 to launch Nov. 22 in US -- report

Nokia's Lumia 1520 smartphoneand 2520 tablet will reportedly reach US consumers on November 22.

This latest tidbit comes from blog site Windows Phone Central, which provided a peak at an inventory list reportedly revealing the launch date for the new devices. The entries for the large-screened 1520 phone, or phablet, show all four color variants due to be carried by AT&T. The listings for the 2520 tablet indicate that it will be offered by both AT&T and Verizon.

'So excited' Microsoft jumps gun on Lumia 1520 preorders

The official Microsoft Web page taking preorders for Nokia's Lumia 1520 phone went live Wednesday and then suddenly disappeared.

The page -- which now says "this product is currently unavailable" -- had listed the 1520 at $199 with the usual two-year agreement, or $549 without a contract. Carried by AT&T, the phone would be available in black, white, yellow, or red.

Microsoft also had listed a release date of November 15.

Nokia, Samsung agree to extend patent licensing deal

Samsung will again license key mobile patents from Nokia, the companies announced on Monday.

Nokia said that Samsung will license and pay the handset maker for certain patents for a period of five years. The deal kicks off on January 1. Samsung and Nokia's current relationship expires at the end of this year.

Interestingly, Samsung and Nokia weren't able to agree on a price for licensing the patents. The companies plan to go to arbitration on the price, but that isn't expected to be completed until 2015.

Inrix doubles street coverage with XD Traffic

The Inrix XD Traffic service, launched this week, puts the company's digital traffic reporting on twice as many roads as previously. Inrix provides traffic data for in-vehicle navigation systems and through its own smartphone app.

Inrix Director of Product Management Mark Pendergrast told CNET that, along with the increased coverage, XD Traffic increases what it calls resolution of traffic coverage down to 800-foot increments. Previously, Inrix and other companies have used mile-long blocks, reporting the same traffic flow conditions for an entire stretch of road. Android snags record 81 percent of smartphone market

Android continues to gobble up more of the smartphone market.

Google's mobile OS won a global market share of 81.3 percent last quarter, up from 75 percent in the prior year's quarter, research firm Strategy Analytics said on Thursday. Shipments of Android phones hit 204.4 million, a hefty gain over the 129.6 million shipped a year ago.

This might be a tall story, or even one from the depths. But Roger Nilsson swears it's true.

He is the Swedish man who posted an image of a slightly wrecked Nokia Lumia 800 to the Nokia Sweden Facebook page.
