Easy Excellence

The power and features that make Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet the business world's standard can be daunting to new and infrequent users. EZ-Format for Excel makes Excel easy by separating data formatting, maintenance, and analysis tasks. It automates the task of formatting worksheets, enables improved, modifiable totaling, and simplifies common tasks such as splitting worksheets and applying row color. The program bundles the maker's EZ-Subtotal and EZ-Split add-ins as well, and it includes the functionality of the EZ-Stat statistical analysis software.

EZ-Format for Excel integrates seamlessly with Excel, appearing in the Add-Ins Ribbon on the Toolbar. An extensive … Read more

Mobile map projector with GPS lights the way

This handy portable map projector equipped with GPS makes getting lost a thing of the past. All you need is a surface to shine your map on. A friend's forehead would do.

Designed by Jinsun Park and Seonkeun Park of South Korea's Samsung Art & Design Institute, the Maptor is somewhat similar to this map/flashlight we profiled awhile back, but far more convenient. Not only do you not have to bother with tiresome unfolding of paper, you don't have to search for your location, thanks to the GPS function that points it out.

A button lets … Read more

Supposed conversion

Word Excel PowerPoint to Pdf Converter will supposedly convert Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents to PDFs; however, a trial restriction prevented us from seeing the full outcome.

We tested the trial version, which is so limited that we couldn't tell if the program works properly or not. We selected a Word and an Excel document to try with the program. We were informed that the trial version would only convert part of the documents; that for full document conversion we must purchase the program. We let the program convert our files, and when we viewed them, because of the … Read more

From Word to Web

Word/Doc Excel/Xls to Htm Html Converter converts Word and Excel documents to HTML. This is a handy tool, but is more useful for skilled Web site designers versus novices.

We tested the trial version, which puts "unregistered trial version" on the file that it creates, and does not convert the entire document. Users must purchase the full version to avoid these pitfalls. The interface is simple. We selected a Word and an Excel file from our hard drive from within the Word/Doc Excel/Xls to Htm Html Converter. The program converted both files quickly. We … Read more

Easy-to-use schedule manager

OrgScheduler is an attractive and intuitive schedule management program that is a pleasure to use. Although it is not crammed with extra features, it does the basics very well and has a few cool extras to boot.

We loved that OrgScheduler's interface is so clean and intuitive, yet offers users plenty of options. The options for viewing the calendar alone are impressive, with vertical and horizontal views, daily calendars with increments as small as 5 minutes, quarterly and annual views, and quite a few others. However you like to look at your calendar, OrgScheduler can accommodate you, and will … Read more

Excel to PDF

Excel/Xls to Pdf Converter allows users to convert Excel spreadsheets to PDFs with a few simple clicks. The idea behind this program is good, but it's difficult to gauge the overall functionality thanks to several trial limitations.

Overall, the program is easy to use. Users have the option of converting single files or batch converting multiple files. The trial version does not allow batch conversion, and when we tried to convert a single Excel file, a window popped up to tell us that only part of the file was going to be converted, and that for full file … Read more

First Take: Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview

The Microsoft Office 2010 technical preview is available today through invite only and--though it's not in its final form--there are plenty of feature enhancements to be excited about, if Microsoft can pull it off. According to Microsoft, the focus of this update was on three things: to make work flows more efficient; to effectively use Web applications to make your work available anywhere; and to make collaboration with others much easier. In this CNET First Take, we'll take a look at some of the notable feature changes across many of the applications. Microsoft says Office 2010 will let … Read more

Integrates with Excel

This very straightforward program lets you quickly merge cells in any Microsoft Excel spreadsheet without losing any important data. We found the program incredibly easy to use and it proved to be a capable addition to Excel.

The program integrates into MS Excel and adds an additional tab to the interface for easy access. We first selected our cells and then activated the program. A helpful wizard appeared and gave us options for merging the selected cells (column by column, row by row, in one cell), how to separate the values, and where to place the results (top or bottom … Read more

Poorly designed interface

ExcelPipe is supposedly designed to let users search through multiple MS Excel spreadsheets to find and replace special characters in one fell swoop. Unfortunately its vague and poorly designed user interface makes it extremely difficult to accomplish this task.

The user interface is extremely bland. It employs tabs with the hopes of keeping you on track, but we found they worked just the opposite. Rather, the interface lacked any kind of flow, making it difficult to navigate. What's more, the button commands and features were not at all intuitive, and we had no idea how to get started. A … Read more

Read-only spreadsheet scheduler

Easy Shift Scheduler offers users a program to help keep the dizzying statistics of the workweek in check. This Excel Spreadsheet appears to offer everything an employer could want, but the trial version makes it hard to know for certain.

The program is a colorfully designed spreadsheet with a large number of tabs across the bottom to provide you with all the different angles needed to manage employees' time cards. With 11 screens dedicated to employees, scheduling, shifts, and total hours, users can manually fill in the upcoming schedules of up to 25 employees. We imagine the most useful tab … Read more
