Xbox, Nintendo 3DS consoles see high sales numbers

Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's 3DS sales are going strong in the U.S., according to numbers the two companies released today.

The numbers, gathered by research company NPD Group, show Nintendo maintaining a 75 percent market share for portable hardware and Microsoft's Xbox holding onto the top spot for console sales.

This is Xbox's 18th consecutive month at No. 1, with its sales making up 47 percent of current-generation console sales, Jeff Meisner, editor of the Official Microsoft Blog posted today.

The sales equal 257,000 units sold in June with total retail spent on … Read more

Xbox Live down; Microsoft at work on a fix

Xbox Live users are unable to access the online-gaming service, Microsoft has confirmed.

The software company has taken to both its Twitter account and its Service Status page to inform users that Xbox Live is experiencing "difficulties." The Xbox Live Status page specifically says that users are currently unable to sign in to Xbox Live from their Xbox 360 or via Xbox.com.

"We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue," Microsoft wrote on the Status page. "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your … Read more

Is Spec Ops: The Line an oasis in the desert?

Forgive me if I'm absolutely sick and tired of military shooters. It seems that no matter what time of year, there's always a war game that's ready to thrust you into some third-world country and have you shoot a bunch of bad guys for 8 to 10 hours.

The format is severely outplayed, so it's no surprise that going into Spec Ops: The Line I was expecting more of the same. Thankfully, Spec Ops deviates away from conventional shooters to the point that it can be enjoyed independently, all while maintaining a very mature and gritty storyline. It's one of the first games to really vilify war, rather than reward it.… Read more

Get an Xbox 360 Slim 4GB for $161.97

An Xbox isn't just an Xbox. In other words, it's good for more than just playing games, though obviously it has considerable acumen in that department.

It also makes a great Windows Media Center extender, which is awesome if you've paired your PC with one of the CableCard tuners I've mentioned here in the past.

And don't forget streaming: the Xbox gets its Roku on by pulling down Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, and other popular services. (Alas, you need an Xbox Live Gold subscription, which annoys me to no end, but that also enables … Read more

Why we believe most of the massive Xbox roadmap rumor

An atomic rumor in the gaming world exploded on Saturday, perhaps the largest in recent memory, innocently tucked away in a random NeoGAF forum thread. The weapon, a leaked 56-page confidential Microsoft Powerpoint file, serves as a possible early vision for Microsoft's Xbox strategy through 2015 by including juicy conceptual details about the code-named Xbox 720, Kinect 2, and several pairs of augmented-reality glasses.

CNET contacted Microsoft for comment, and a representative noted the company doesn't comment on rumor or speculation.

Within the presentation reside some sensational conceptual ideas for the future of Microsoft's overall entertainment platform. Honestly, despite the bold propositions, very little of it reads as farfetched or illogical. As the hours progressed past the initial leak, an assortment of supplementary details gave further credibility to this massively impactful document (originally teased last month by Nukezilla). First, the basics. … Read more

How to control your Xbox 360 with an iPhone

Microsoft's update to the My Xbox Live app 1.5 brought along support for controlling an Xbox 360 straight from an iPhone. (The update was rolled out across all iOS platforms, but for whatever reason, this feature only works with an iPhone.) Here's how to get it to work.… Read more

Lollipop Chainsaw cuts through normal video game stereotypes

Last summer's Shadows of the Damned was an overlooked triumph that excelled on multiple levels. Its style, humor, campy storyline, and overall originality easily made it one of the best games of 2011.

Developer Grasshopper Manufacture and Creative Director Suda 51 are back, once again challenging mainstream gaming archetypes by approaching things from a quirky and unique against-the-grain mentality. Lollipop Chainsaw also introduces a collaboration with filmmaker James Gunn ("Slither," "Dawn of the Dead" remake), that results in arguably the offbeat developer's most approachable game yet.

Lollipop Chainsaw might not have the best graphics and it's definitely a bit rough around the edges, but it's a welcome change of pace that instills some confidence in the gamer who is bored with cookie-cutter gaming stereotypes. … Read more

Xbox Live launches app to stream all Paramount movies

Xbox continues to expand its repertoire of ways to stream movies. Paramount Pictures and Microsoft announced the launch of a joint app today that lets Xbox Live Gold subscribers stream bought or rented movies on their gaming consoles.

"This app offers users instant access to view any Paramount movies on their Xbox 360 console that they purchase from the Paramount Movies Web site," an Xbox Live spokesperson told CNET in an e-mail. "The catalog of premium movies is continuing to grow as new titles are released from the studio."

Five lessons from E3 2012

LOS ANGELES--I've lost track of how many E3 shows I've been to. It doesn't matter. What's important is that the show used to be larger, more vibrant...and more relevant. What happened?

If you boil down this year's show, new hardware was scarce and new software didn't fill the gap. Still, trends were present and lessons, too, that I hope get applied to next year's show. Yes, it was an odd year this year. … Read more
