PayPal adds 15 new retailers to its brick-and-mortar roster

PayPal announced today it is partnering with 15 more U.S. retailers aiming to get shoppers to use PayPal's offline payment system.

"Consumers are relying on technology now more than ever to simplify their lives when it comes to shopping and paying, and retailers must adapt to this shift or risk becoming irrelevant," PayPal President David Marcus wrote in a blog post. "Innovative retailers everywhere are looking for ways to improve the shopping experience, extend loyalty programs and better engage with their customers."

LG Optimus Elite gains access to Google Wallet

Starting today, Virgin Mobile customers who will purchase their LG Optimus Elite between now and July 18 on a Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk account will be able to activate Google Wallet.

Users must sign up for Google Wallet within seven days of purchasing their Elite. Customers will also get a Google prepaid card with $25 worth of credit included.

The Elite is Virgin Mobile's first smartphone to be equipped with NFC, or near field communication, which allows services like Google Wallet to communicate wirelessly with other NFC-enabled products within short distances.

Carrier mobile payments venture signs up 50 merchant partners

The wireless carriers' mobile-payments joint venture, after a slow start, is picking up some steam.

Isis, a partnership between AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile, has lined up 50 merchant partners, including heavy hitters like Coca-Cola, Macy's, and Foot Locker, as it gets closer to rolling out its service in trials in Austin, Texas, and Salt Lake City, Utah.

MasterCard jumps into mobile payments with own digital wallet

NEW ORLEANS--Think there are too many digital wallets out there? MasterCard would disagree.

The No. 2 payments processor today unveiled PayPass Wallet Services, its own take on the digital wallet. Initially, it will pop up in the form of a payment icon at merchant Web sites. The wallet will allow users to store all of their cards, and MasterCard plans to distribute developer tools to allow other wallets to work with its network. The move is an attempt to broaden PayPass beyond contactless payments and into something more ubiquitous.

Google ups cash reward for being hacked

In an effort to cut down on hacking, bugs, and vulnerabilities, Google offers dollar rewards for people to hack into its Web services.

The Internet giant began swapping security research for cash over the past couple of years, but today it announced that it was upping the ante.

"In just over a year, the program paid out around $460,000 to roughly 200 individuals," Google security team members Adam Mein and Michal Zalewski wrote in a blog post. "We're confident beyond any doubt the program has made Google users safer."

EU to investigate mobile wallet scheme

EU regulators are looking into competition concerns surrounding a joint venture in mobile payments by Everything Everywhere, Vodafone and O2.

The UK's biggest cellular operators said in June that they were creating a clearing house for mobile payments, which would act as an intermediary between advertisers, banks and retailers. However, Three complained to the European Commission that it had been shut out of the deal.

Google buys TxVia to boost Wallet

Google has broken out its checkbook and signed off on a new deal to acquire payments processing provider TxVia in a bid to bolster its Wallet product, which has recently taken a PR battering.

Google Wallet represents the search giant's push into the physical payments space in a bid to replace the physical wallet with an NFC-powered Android smartphone. Google has teamed up with the payment industry's big end of town, including Citibank, Visa, and MasterCard for credit card payments. It also issues its own prepaid cards for those who prefer an alternative.

Google Wallet co-founding engineer jumps ship to Square

One of Google Wallet's co-founding engineers has left the Web giant for a job at mobile-payments processor Square.

Rob von Behren, who had worked at Google for more than eight years and on the NFC-based Google Wallet since 2009, recently changed his LinkedIn profile to indicate his new employment at Square. In an e-mail statement to NFC Times, which first noticed and reported the move, von Behren said the departure was unexpected.
