Surface Remix Project shows a different way to Click In

Panos Panay, the Microsoft VP in charge of Surface, today displayed a different way to use the company's tablet at the unveiling of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2. Called the Surface Remix Project, it's clearly based on the same touch-sensitive technology of the Touch Cover 2 but with a different template on top that changes the functionality -- and the tone of the product -- completely.

The Surface Remix Project is basically a simplified set of DJ controls built into a Touch Cover. Instead of QWERTY, you have 16 large square touch pads that let you … Read more

Surface 2 accessories step up: Backlit Type and Touch Covers, Power Cover, Docking Station (hands-on)

How do you improve upon the Surface, Microsoft's tablet-as-PC that debuted last year? Internal upgrades are always welcome: more battery life, a better display, amped-up graphics. But the real killer apps of the next Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets might once again be the accessories.

The Type Cover was the one part I loved the most about the last Surface Pro, for good reason: it worked great, felt small, and acted as a screen cozy. The Type Cover 2 and Touch Cover 2 make small but very important improvements: they both add backlit keyboards, and the Touch … Read more

Surface 2 declassified: How Microsoft made Surface into the tablet the world said it wanted

REDMOND, Wash. -- Panos Panay and I stand on the third floor of Microsoft's Studio B, an unassuming building easily missed amid the company's sprawling Redmond campus. Panay, the Microsoft VP in charge of the Surface, looks a bit tired as he leans on a handrail and looks out across the inner courtyard of the building, the hub of Microsoft's ever-expanding and increasingly impressive hardware efforts. Still, he's visibly enthusiastic about the work he's about to show me.

A series of balconies frame a central meeting area below. To our left, a giant display ticks … Read more

Next-gen Surface tablets jack up components

NEW YORK -- Microsoft on Monday unveiled an update to its Surface tablets, both the full-Windows Surface Pro 2 and the stripped-down Surface 2.

Surface tablets are Microsoft's own take on the burgeoning niche -- one that is largely dominated by Apple's iPad, but with a healthy dose of competition from devices using Google's Android OS. Microsoft, not wanting to miss out on the tablet gravy train, opted to push Windows 8 and Windows RT through its own products. While Microsoft's first attempt last year led to disappointing results, the company is trying again with improved internal specs.… Read more

On Monday, September 23, Microsoft will be launching (but not shipping) its next-generation Surface tablets at an invitation-only event in New York City.

In the past few weeks, lots of leaks have revealed much of what's expected to debut at the launch. Though Microsoft officials haven't commented on or confirmed these specs, I've heard and seen information that leads me to believe they are correct.

The new Surfaces are going to look almost identical to the current Surfaces, as they are going to use the same 10.6-inch screens and VaporMg casing and be compatible with the … Read more

Lots of Windows ARM tablets on the way, says Microsoft

Microsoft is hardly giving up on ARM-based tablets. An executive also hinted at future phablets at the company's financial analyst meeting on Thursday.

But the company is keenly aware that investors have a lot of questions about Windows RT -- which has not fared well in the marketplace nor financially. Microsoft took a charge to the tune of $900 million for the Surface RT tablet in July.

"I know it's on the minds of the people in the room. Can you talk about the role that Windows RT plays going forward?" -- was the question Tami … Read more

Microsoft expected to improve display on Surface 2 tablet

The next version of Microsoft's Surface RT is expected to finally go high-resolution, according to DisplaySearch, making it more competitive with Android and Apple offerings.

"What we're seeing is that it's 1,920x1,080," Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch, told CNET.

This echoes earlier reports that cite a "full HD" display.

Other rumored specs, first reported at, include an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor -- matching Android tablets like the new Asus Transformer Pad -- two-step style kickstand, Windows RT 8.1, and possibly 4GB of memory.
