China workers protest as Nokia-Microsoft deal progresses

Factory workers in southern China are protesting Nokia's recent deal to sell off its Devices business to Microsoft, according to a new report.

Workers who build Nokia products in China gathered Wednesday outside their factory to protest, saying that the contracts they were forced to sign after Nokia announced plans to sell off the Devices unit worsen employment terms, according to Reuters. In interviews with Reuters, factory workers claimed that the Microsoft buyout would hurt their compensation. One unidentified source, however, told Reuters that it was more about getting additional compensation.

Factory protests have become somewhat commonplace in China. … Read more

Locked up: Why AT&T racks up so many exclusive phones

AT&T and Nokia have long enjoyed a close partnership, but at one New York event in July, their kinship led to a particularly awkward moment.

It was after Nokia had unveiled the Lumia 1020 and its 41-megapixel camera. AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega had just walked off stage after extolling the virtues of the device and touting its exclusive partnership, and then-Nokia CEO Stephen Elop began fielding questions about the device. Which is when things got testy.

"AT&T has been a terrible partner for Lumia devices," said one audience member, … Read more

Supersize Nokia Lumia 1520 is a hardware champ

Bigger isn't always better, but in Nokia's case, it is. The 6-inch Lumia 1520 for AT&T is the fastest Windows Phone ever made. Slimmer and lighter than you'd expect for a supersize handset, the 1520 brings home the goods: a huge 1080p HD display, a 20-megapixel camera, and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor -- the latter a first for Windows Phone.

That high-res camera and outdoor legibility were bright spots. My red model's slippery finish, however, made it too easy to fumble. Some weak points with the platform itself -- like a limited … Read more

Apple's Schiller: Samsung gained ground thanks to copycat tactics

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- It pays to copy Apple. Well, kinda.

Phil Schiller, head of marketing at Apple, testified Friday in court here that the reason Samsung gained so much market share in smartphones was because it copied Apple. That's also why Samsung flourished while other smartphone makers such as Motorola and Nokia floundered, he said.

"There is a difference," Schiller said. "One is copying. The others are not -- as much."

Along with suing Samsung, Apple also has pursued lawsuits against Motorola, HTC, and other rivals.

Samsung's attorneys, meanwhile, have argued that people … Read more

Although neither device has an official name yet, they're currently code-named Goldfinger and Moneypenny -- references to the James Bond franchise -- according to @evleaks.
