What I want to see from Macs and iPads at Apple's event

A little over a month after Apple's iPhone 5S and 5C debut, another event looms with promises of unveiling everything else: namely, the rest of the Macs and iPads for 2013. The invitation says "we have a lot to cover," and I hope so: after all, there are a lot of unanswered questions about Apple's product lineup this year, and many devices that haven't seen updates since 2012.

Here's what I'd like to see.

A Retina Mini Before anything else, this. The iPad Mini is perfect sizewise, but the lack of a higher-resolution, … Read more

Review: iPhone / iPod Touch Backup Extractor for Mac eases the viewing of iOS backups in OS X

iPhone / iPod Touch Backup Extractor for Mac converts iOS device backups created by iTunes into Mac OS X files that are easy to access and use. The app can retrieve detailed information stored in backups, making it a useful tool for developers investigating bugs or for users trying to decode SMS messages, notes, or call histories from SQLite database files. Even though it's quite basic, the app does a good job.

iPhone / iPod Touch Backup Extractor quickly detects iPhone and iPad Touch devices that have been backed up by iTunes and lets you extract all information contained within the … Read more

Siri 'Eyes Free' mode comes to six more Chevy cars

Chevrolet integrated Apple's personal assistant Siri into two cars last year, and it's gone so well that the company is adding the functionality to six more vehicles.

The way Siri integration works is by wirelessly connecting to the Chevy MyLink infotainment system via Bluetooth. This allows people with newer generations of the iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini, or iPod Touch running iOS 6 or iOS 7 to perform Siri-related tasks using a voice activation button on their car's steering wheel.

In this "Eyes Free" mode, users can make calls, access their calendars, play songs from their … Read more

iPad 5 will sport fingerprint reader, suggests leaked image

The iPad 5 will offer the same Touch ID fingerprint sensor found in the iPhone 5S, at least if an image leaked by a Chinese blog site is legit.

Offered by Chinese site Chinese site ctechcn.com, the image shows what purports to be the fifth-generation iPad with a home button that looks just like the one on the 5S. That home button incorporates Apple's Touch ID sensor, which allows users to unlock their device via fingerprint recognition.

A recent video from Unbox Therapy suggests that the Touch ID sensor from an iPhone 5S would fit perfectly into the … Read more

Did Oreck break the mold with its Touch Bagless Vacuum Cleaner?

When I was a kid, I remember seeing commercials for Oreck vacuum cleaners on TV. David Oreck himself usually starred in the ads, and when he did, he'd always cheerfully proclaim the merits of his machine, the 8-pound Oreck XL. The XL had the look of a complete clunker, with an ugly, dated design that seemed like it hadn't been updated since 1963, when Oreck first started selling vacuums in Louisiana. All the same, there was just something endearing and perhaps infectious about Oreck's unapologetic confidence. Sure enough, everyone I knew who used an Oreck XL swore … Read more

An iMessage prank every iPhone owner needs to know about

One of the advantages that iMessage has over text messaging is that an indicator is displayed when the other person in the conversation is typing a message. This simple animation gives you a heads-up of an incoming message; I often find myself staring at the dancing dots until the message eventually comes through.

That same feature can also be the center of a prank. Yesterday I spotted a tweet from @Panzer linking to a GIF-based iMessage prank. I wasn't sure what to expect when I clicked on the link, but I was not disappointed.

What you'll need to … Read more
