CNET tablet battery life results

Editor's note:This list was originally posted on July 25 and is updated regularly.

Battery life testing is one of the last evaluations we subject tablets to at CNET Labs, but by no means is it the least valued. How long you can use your tablet is nearly as important as what it is you do while using it.

Our CNET labs testing standards ensure that all tablets, regardless of size, color, or operating system, are tested as close to equally as possible. Details on how we test tablets are included below the testing results chart. We've also … Read more

Sales ban on Samsung's tablet remains in U.S. until trial

Samsung's latest effort to get the U.S. sales ban of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 lifted was derailed today.

In a court order (PDF), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit denied Samsung's request to suspend a preliminary injunction on its tablet that rival Apple won against it last month.

As intellectual property tracking blog FOSS Patents points out, this decision was coupled with another rejection (PDF) of Samsung's request to expedite an appeal on the matter.

"We will continue to pursue a request for an appeal of the Galaxy Tab 10.… Read more

How to use SSH host names for tabs in the OS X Terminal

While the OS X Terminal is not a familiar operating environment for most Mac users, those who have had experience with Unix-based systems will find it to be an invaluable tool for managing their systems. One of the most common uses of the Terminal is to establish a remote log-in session on a system using the secure shell (SSH) command, and sometimes invoke multiple connections to the same system and different systems at the same time.

As a result of this, you might find you have many windows open at once to manage these connections in, though starting with Snow … Read more

Wait, did a judge just say Samsung is 'not as cool' as Apple?

I have a feeling the world's courts are getting a little fed up with Apple/Samsung lawsuits.

Or even just tech lawsuits in general.

However, today's verdict in Apple's attempt to prove that the Samsung Galaxy Tab is an iPad with a longer brand name takes judicial irritation into uncharted and rather lovely waters.

In finding that Samsung had not at all, in any way, well, not quite copied Apple's signature tablet, Judge Colin Birss used very contemporary, non-technical language to make his point.

I am grateful to Computerworld for helping me identify that the judge … Read more

Galaxy Tab doesn't copy Apple designs, U.K. court rules

Score one for Samsung Electronics.

After several legal defeats resulting in a product ban, Samsung finally got a court to side with it. The company said that the High Court of England and Wales ruled that its Galaxy Tab did not infringe upon Apple's tablet designs, and found 50 different recognizable traits.

The victory is a measure of relief after a few rough weeks in which a U.S. judge ordered a ban on the Galaxy Nexus, resulting in Google pulling it from the Google Play store before putting it back up Saturday. Samsung has filed an appeal and … Read more

Samsung loses bid to lift U.S. sales ban against Galaxy Tab

A U.S. judge today rejected Samsung's appeal of a preliminary injunction against U.S. sales of its Galaxy Tab 10.1, according to Reuters.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh granted an Apple request last week for a preliminary injunction against the Android-powered tablet, largely considered a front-runner to challenge the iPad. Samsung had asked the court to suspend the order pending resolution of an appeal.

While Apple has already posted a $2.6 million bond as required to initiate the injunction, that doesn't necessarily mean sales of the tablet will immediately cease in the U.S. … Read more

Open IE-only pages in Chrome with IE Tab

For years, Microsoft's Internet Explorer has trailed Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox in the browser battles, yet Web surfers still hit on pages that only load in IE. Blackfish Software's IE Tab is a free Chrome extension that opens such pages inside a Chrome tab. With it, you can load sites built on IE's rendering engine or that use ActiveX controls. Web site designers will like the way they can test how pages load in IE without leaving Chrome.

This free Chrome extension downloads from Google's Chrome Store, but it's a painless process … Read more

Apple posts $2.6 million bond to ban Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Apple has done just about all it can to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned from sale in the U.S.

The company late yesterday posted a $2.6 million bond to inch closer to stopping the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from being offered for sale, according to Foss Patents, which was first to report the news. The bond was set Tuesday by Judge Lucy Koh, of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, who awarded Apple a preliminary injunction against Samsung's tablet.

The posting of bonds is a commonly used technique designed … Read more

Apple wins injunction against Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Apple has been granted a preliminary injunction against U.S. sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, the tablet deemed by many as the leading challenger to the iPad.

The ruling was handed down today by judge Lucy Koh for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, according to a Reuters report. Her order will take effect once Apple posts a $2.6 million bond to protect Samsung if the injunction is later found to have been unnecessary.

"Although Samsung has a right to compete, it does not have a right to compete unfairly, … Read more
