LinkedIn promises simplified profile-editing tools and easier ways to connect to other users with its new profile page redesign.

The new, more visual profile layout is meant to simplify the user experience and make it more useful daily, said Deep Nishar, senior vice president of products and user experience at LinkedIn. "We want to ensure that LinkedIn is working for our members -- even when they're not online," he said.

"We want to put the right business intelligence in front of the right member at the right time," LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner added.

This year, elect a video game president

Forget Barack Obama or Mitt Romney. This year, I'm voting for Link from Legend of Zelda.

Let's face it, during presidential-election seasons, the non-stop chatter about Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, plus all the drama, lies, and repetitious arguments, can get almost dizzying. To offer some relief, gaming Web site IGN created the 2012 Video Game Presidential Election featuring five candidates from iconic video game franchises. … Read more

Google, Apple top LinkedIn's list of sought-after employers

LinkedIn has accumulated more than 175 million "professionals" on its service, and after crunching billions of data points on its site came up with a list of the most sought-after employers in five countries and four job functions. Tech leads the parade, with Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, salesforce.com and Expedia among the top companies on the list.

Also in the top 100 were Zynga (42), Amazon (25), HP (37), Netflix (39), Groupon (41), Oracle (60) and IBM (74).

LinkedIn, which said it has two million companies in its database, also tracked top employers by geography. … Read more

Boxee readying new set-top box with DVR support?

The makers of the Boxee Box set-top box appear close to releasing its successor in the coming months, and it could offer support for over-the-air live television, as well as DVR support and the usual cast and crew of Web apps.

Sadly, those looking for the next great aesthetic breakthrough from the company might find the leaked device a bit uninspiring. Photos supplied from The Verge indicate that the Boxee TV might shed its predecessor's cube-like design for a more conventional rectangular prism look with a matte black finish. … Read more

iPad Mini rumors ramp up

Tuesday's CNET Update turns up the heat:

More rumors about the iPad Mini are cropping up. We've previously heard that the iPad Mini may be unveiled in October, but a source tells Fortune that Apple will send press invites next week for an October announcement. In addition, a Japanese Apple blog says a Brazilian factory has begun production of the iPad Mini, and other blogs have been showing purported images of parts, including rear casings and screen covers.

The "sexy" thermostat is back. Nest 2.0, the second generation of the learning thermostat, is 20 percent … Read more

Follow the leaders: LinkedIn puts own spin on 'followers'

LinkedIn knows there's value in industry-focused content, so it has organized a network of professionals who have agreed to blog for the social network at no charge.

LinkedIn rolled out the new feature today, which enables people to follow selected industry leaders who will post original content to the site.

It may sound like LinkedIn is taking a page from Facebook, which (taking a page from Twitter) allowed subscriptions a year ago, but LinkedIn is doing it in the measured, grown-up way it's known for.

The social network has limited the number of people who can have followers … Read more

Current Caller ID shares caller's social-media updates: TMI?

Current Caller ID is an almost fiendishly clever app. It feeds your contacts' social-media updates right to your Android phone. Even if Aunt Matilda's status update about her recent purchase of an iPhone 5 fell under your Facebook radar, you'll be able to quickly get up to speed when she calls you for tech support.

For friends and colleagues who use Twitter and let apps access their Facebook pages, the Current Caller ID app works very well. If a good chunk of your contact list falls into that category, then the app can add a lot to your experience. … Read more

Tips on opening links and searches in Safari

When you open a Web page in Safari, either by clicking a link, opening a bookmark, or performing a Web search, by default the results appear in the current browser window. Also, like most browsers, if you right-click on a link Safari provides a contextual menu where you can choose to open the link in a new tab or window. However, beyond these familiar options, Safari includes others that can be useful on occasion.

Like many programs in OS X, Safari has a number of hidden behaviors that can be invoked by using modifier keys, and a few of these … Read more

Myspace gets a new face

Tuesday's CNET Update is bringing sexy back to Myspace:

Myspace is getting an extreme makeover. The former king of social media has a video teaser of what the site's relaunch will look like. It's focused around displaying your photos, videos and music in a horizontal-scrolling profile. It looks like a mash-up between Pinterest and Microsoft's Windows 8 interface.

Music is still a major part of Myspace. There's an area to create playlist mixes, and those mixes can also have photos. (You could post a party playlist along with the party photos, for example.) There's … Read more

Twitter users may be victims of direct message malware

A friend of mine recently sent me a direct message on Twitter, it said "lol u didnt se them taping u" and had a link to Facebook. I hadn't remembered being taped in the past few days and I'd never seen my friend use this type of Twitter-shorthand, along with typos. To me, it was obviously spam.

I'm not the only one to be getting these spammy direct messages on Twitter that lead to bogus Facebook links. Apparently a lot of people have been complaining of these messages, according to Sophos analyst Graham Cluley who … Read more
