Judge dismisses authors' case against Google Books

A federal judge has dismissed a copyright infringement lawsuit that an author group brought against Google, concluding that books are like Web pages when it comes to indexing them and displaying small excerpts in search results.

The Google Books project has indexed millions of books, digitizing them without copyright holders' permission, and the Authors Guild sued over the fact. But U.S. Circuit Judge Denny Chin in New York rejected that argument, granting on Thursday Google's motion for summary judgment.

He agreed with Google's assertion that showing "snippets&… Read more

Apple to lavish $10.5B on production line tech

Apple plans to spend billions next year to automate certain tasks in its production line.

The company recently revealed in its 10-K filing that it has earmarked $11 billion for capital expenditures for 2014. Out of that amount, around $10.5 billion will go toward product tooling, manufacturing process equipment, and corporate facilities and infrastructure, including information systems hardware, software, and enhancements.

Specifically, much of the spending will be on equipment that can tackle the mass production of iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks, among other devices, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.

Air vs. Air: Can the iPad Air be a suitable stand-in for a MacBook Air?

Apple has two Airs in its family, and they're both closer in spirit than ever before. The 2013 MacBook Air is less expensive than 2012's, and has a better battery life. The new iPad Air is smaller, lighter, and has a processor that's inching closer to the potential of a laptop.

Here's the funny thing: the iPad Air starts at $499, but fully loaded up to the highest configuration, it comes to a little under $1,000 ($929, to be specific). The 11-inch MacBook Air -- which is the most diminutive Apple laptop -- starts at $… Read more

Five tips for using iBooks in OS X Mavericks

One of the bright, new features of Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks is iBooks. Now, you can use your Mac to read and annotate books, just as you can with your iPhone or iPad. Still, the new iBooks app for OS X has a few kinks to iron out. For example, if you have multiple … Read more

Name your own price for a thriller e-book bundle

Halloween may be over (and I've got the candy gut to prove it), but it's still the season of creepy-spooky-scary, right? Heck, the way the wind is howling outside my window, it's the perfect time to hide under the covers -- with a good book, of course.

The good bundlers at StoryBundle have put together their latest, a six-book collection of thrillers. Price: you name it. Well, anything over $3, that is -- a more-than-reasonable minimum for this many quality works. And if you pay at least $10, you'll get a total of 10 novels.

Apple working on a fix for new Retina MacBook input issues

Apple on Wednesday acknowledged an issue with some models of its newest MacBook Pro with Retina Display that would leave the keyboard and trackpad unresponsive.

Those computers were released last week alongside the debut of new iPads. Some users have been complaining of the issue on their devices since then, though it's been unclear just how widespread it is.

In a new knowledge base page Wednesday afternoon, the company noted the issue and said a fix was coming:

Apple is aware of rare circumstances where the built-in keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive on 13-inch MacBook Pro with … Read more

Review: Lektz eBook Reader gives you tons of format support

Lektz eBook Reader works well as a universal eBook reader thanks to its great format support. Its layout lets your eBooks shine their best and brightest, but it's a little lacking in the features department. A night mode or better annotations would push this reader up with the big names like Nook and Kindle.

This application supports any Lektz Publisher Stores' books, so you'll definitely need it if you download your books from that market. In addition to supporting those, Lektz eBook Reader offers support for both EPUB 2 and EPUB 3, as well as PDFs and other … Read more
