Have we found the world's smallest digicam?

The miniaturization of point-and-shoots sparked a frenzy among camera manufacturers a few years ago, with companies duking it out to see which one could dish out the smallest digicam. Well, I think we have a clear winner.

The Chobi Mini Digital Camera from Japan Trust Technologies measures just 1.7 inches by 1.1 inches by less than half an inch and weighs a featherlight half an ounce.

Despite its petite structure, this snapper boasts functions that put it almost on par with cameras from big brands. The Chobi point-and-shoot captures images at 2,048x1,536 pixels and records videos … Read more

Opera Mini for iPhone already over 1 million downloads strong

Three days after its late Monday launch, Opera Software spread the news that its server-assisted Opera Mini browser for the iPhone capped over a million downloads the first day of widespread availability, which was Tuesday.

That's 1,023,380 downloads to be exact, according to Apple's end-of-day download count. Good enough for us; cue Dr. Evil.

Opera went on in a press release to boast that Opera Mini 5 for iPhone currently sits pretty as the top iPhone app in 22 Apple stores as of 8 a.m. CET, including the U.S., Japan, Spain, Indonesia, and Germany.… Read more

New MacBook Pro plays nicer with TVs

Bad news: the new MacBook Pros still lack HDMI, a very convenient and increasingly ubiquitous way for any laptop to output its audio and video on to an HDTV or receiver.

Good news: it's slightly easier to connect your MacBook Pro to a TV than it was before.

MacBook Pros now support an audio signal over the Mini DisplayPort jack. Believe it or not, the old MacBooks could only output video through that port, and audio had to be output via a separate audio cable connected to the audio-out jack. We can say from experience that connecting previous MacBooks … Read more

Browser winner

Opera Mini looks like your average iPhone Web browser, but it's the details behind the scenes that may have it replacing the default Safari browser on your iPhone.

Unlike Safari and other iPhone browsers created using the WebKit standard, Opera Mini 5 for iPhone is what's called a proxy browser. It sends Web page requests to Opera's servers, which then compress the Web page before sending it back to the phone, resulting in an often faster way to distribute Web content.

Like Opera Mini on other mobile platforms, the browser sports an attractive, icon-rich dark theme. The … Read more

They did it: Opera Mini lands on iPhone

Fewer than three weeks ago, we wondered aloud if Opera Software's bid to get its Opera Mini Web browser into Apple's iPhone App Store was pure folly, or if it was a gamble that Opera could actually win. Late Monday, Opera (and Apple) proved doubters and naysayers--like me--wrong when Apple approved Opera Mini for iPhone.

Apple's acceptance of a Web browser app may not seem like a big to-do, until one looks at Apple's notoriously stringent interpretation of the rules it created to keep competing software off the iPhone. Mobile Web browsers that compete with the … Read more

Mini electric car tackles Nurburgring

Mini intends to prove that the electric version of the Mini Cooper can be every bit as fun as its gasoline-powered cars. And a few laps around the famed Nurburgring race track in Germany make the point admirably.

The company, which began leasing a test fleet of Mini E electric vehicles last year to select individuals as a means of gathering real-world data, retro-fitted one of the cars with racing gear and sent it around the 28.3 kilometer Nurburgring - Nordschleife. Its time: 9:51.45 minutes, while hitting a top speed of 116 mph on the track. That … Read more
