When real, normal people get a hold of Google Glass, they might be fascinated.

Equally, they might be underwhelmed. Their sense of underwhelment might increase with every mocking comment they get from other real, normal people.

In any case, Google Glass won't be thrust into the real, normal world for a year. Or even more.

Google Glass kernel software goes public

OK, this is on the seriously geeky side, but if you're keeping tabs on all things Google Glass, you'll want to know that the software kernel underlying the high-tech spectacles is now publicly available.

The blog Karthik's Geek Center noted Saturday that the kernel source code for Google Glass has been posted to the Google Code site, ready for download. The brief writeup says that's "unlikely to be the permanent home" for the code, which should end up being relocated to a spot adjacent to "other android kernel source releases relatively soon."… Read more

As Schmidt speaks of caution, Google Glass gets hacked

Within hours of Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt's revelation that apps for Google Glass will require Google's approval, a renowned hacker/developer has shattered the notion of locked-down Glass. More specifically, Jay Freeman -- aka "Saurik" -- has jailbroken it.

Freeman is also the creator of the popular Cydia app store for jailbroken iOS devices, and he tweeted a photo Friday afternoon that's apparently a capture of the "Device info" dialog for the pair of Glass he purchased from Google as a developer. Eric Schmidt admits talking to Google Glass can be weird

At least one Google executive acknowledges that using the company's interactive eyewear can be kind of odd.

Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, who spoke Thursday at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, said that talking to Google Glass is the "weirdest thing," according to a report from Reuters.

He noted that people will need to develop new etiquette for the product, which can record video and relay information that only the wearer can see.

"There are obviously places where Google Glasses are inappropriate," he said, according to Reuters.

It's becoming difficult to defend taste, decency, and style in a world that is rapidly being overtaken by those who believe technology is all.

I understand that many who believe they are ahead of their time are terribly excited about wearing their somewhat less than stylish Google Glass all over the planet.

I also understand that there are certain places -- bars and strip clubs, for example -- that have already expressed their desire to eject anyone wearing Google's famed, Internet-connected tools.

If it isn't not odd enough to be wearing a computer on your face, how about controlling it with nods, blinks and air pinching? Some interesting phrasing of code in the MyGlass companion app seems to indicate the Google Glass headset will have gesture controls.

Google Glass for everybody a 'year-ish' away

Google Glass is the latest hot technology getting daily buzz, but it won't be coming to stores soon and it won't be cheap. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt addressed the question of when consumers might be able to purchase the digital eyewear during an interview with the BBC: "It's fair to say that thousands of these will be in use by developers over the next months, and then based on their feedback we will make some product changes, and it's probably a year-ish away."
