Huawei MediaPad X1 is a skinny, 4G tablet that acts as your phone

When does a phone become a tablet? Is it all about the size or is there more to it? With the MediaPad X1, Huawei has blurred the line more than ever. It swears blindly that this 7-inch Android device is a tablet, but it also has a SIM card slot that provides 4G LTE data as well as letting you make calls and send SMS messages -- functioning, essentially, as a phone.

As well as its phone skills, the X1 packs a Full HD display, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, an attractive metal body and a 13-megapixel camera. It's … Read more

Microsoft: Pretty please make Windows Phones based on our design

BARCELONA, Spain--Microsoft wants to make it a lot easier for companies to develop Windows Phones.

The software giant on Sunday unveiled plans to release a reference design based on its mobile operating system and using Qualcomm hardware. Basically, that means anyone -- from established handset vendors like HTC to PC makers like Hewlett-Packard -- can build phones relatively quickly and cheaply. If the companies want, they can essentially slap their own branding on the device from Microsoft.

"We're open for business on Windows Phone to anyone who wants to build a Windows Phone," said Nick Parker, the … Read more

Facebook Messenger to arrive on Windows Phone 'soon'

BARCELONA, Spain -- Windows Phone users will finally be able to use Facebook Messenger.

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said the app will come to Windows Phone in the next few weeks.

"Facebook Messenger is probably one of the most requested individual apps we have our customers asking for," Belfiore said during a press conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Windows Phone has received praise from reviewers, but that hasn't equated to blockbuster sales. Last year, handset vendors shipped 33.4 million Windows Phone devices globally, giving the operating system a market share of 3.3 percent, … Read more

Use mobile dictionary apps even when offline

Having an online dictionary with you at all times is a terrific convenience. Google's "define" search feature is probably one of the quickest and most convenient ways to look up a word, but it's only good when you have an Internet connection. Providentially, there are two mobile apps that allow you to look up definitions even when you're offline.

The Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com mobile apps are two of the most popular dictionary apps in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. The Android versions of the apps and Merriam-Webster's iOS app … Read more

Gear 2 running Tizen: Smart move for Samsung smartwatch?

BARCELONA, Spain -- Samsung's first move with Tizen may not be big, but it could prove to be pretty savvy.

The Korean electronics giant has been working on Tizen-based smartphones for months, but the first global product to use the open-source Linux operating system won't be a phone. Rather, Samsung on Monday will unveil a new version of its Gear smartwatch that runs the company's Tizen software rather than Google's Android operating system. Introducing Tizen to the masses via Gear may be one of the smartest moves Samsung could make. The reason? Apps.

Sometimes the only proper response to someone on Twitter, or even via Messages, is a GIF. With a proper search, you can find an animated image for almost any situation.

Enter GIFWrapped. This free app not only makes it easy to sync and share GIFs using any one of your iOS devices, but it also gives you the ability to search (and then save) new GIFs. You can … Read more

Galaxy S5: More than just another phone to Samsung

There's a lot riding on Samsung's Galaxy S5, and it goes beyond having the most coveted smartphone in the market.

The Galaxy S5, which will make its debut on Monday at Samsung's "Unpacked 2014 Episode 1" event at Mobile World Congress, serves as a potentially critical turning point for the Korean electronics giant. After a lackluster response to the Galaxy S4, Samsung's impending new flagship phone could indicate whether the company still has "it," and ultimately determine whether the company cements its position as king of the hill -- or starts to … Read more

Add to your Feedbin using a Safari bookmarklet

I'm always looking for an easier way to subscribe to new RSS feeds. With most of my browsing of new sites coming on my iPhone or iPad, due to following links on Twitter to new sites, I wanted to figure out a quick way to add a feed to Feedbin without having to copy and paste the URL into another app.

I figured the easiest way would be to use a Safari bookmark that would send the URL of the site I was currently viewing to Feedbin, and subscribe me to its main feed. My idea was to find … Read more
