PDFs on Android

Adobe's PDF Reader predictably lets Android owners quickly open PDFs that they've downloaded from a browser or have received in e-mail attachments. It packs in multitouch gestures for zooming, landscape orientation, and a tool that will resize the text on wide documents to fit your phone's narrow screen. We found it to work quite well, even on large files. A 12MB, picture-rich PDF file we had downloaded in Android's stock browser opened up in just four seconds and zipped around like butter on a hot pan. Part of the reason for that is that the software … Read more

Voice command plus

Your Android phone may have some measure of voice commands baked in, but Vlingo's premium offering adds the capability to launch apps, update your Twitter status, and send e-mail and text messages when you bark orders at it. (We'd love to see voice commands for playing music and taking photo and video, too.) On top of that, Vlingo will also dial your contacts, plumb Google Maps, and search Google or Yahoo. We should mention that there is a short learning curve in picking up the right voice triggers to get Vlingo to search and perform tasks.

Report: Microsoft to restructure consumer unit

Microsoft is preparing to revamp the team that oversees its consumer gadgets division, as it falls farther behind Apple and Google in the market for mobile phones and other devices, according to a news report.

Citing unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal said the software giant could announce "major organizational changes at its Entertainment & Devices Division as early as this week." The Journal said those changes would include J Allard relinquishing his role as the chief experience officer and chief technology officer of the division. Allard had been overseeing a recently aborted tablet PC project. The unit … Read more

Adobe's PDF Reader app comes to Android phones

Amid the flurry of Android news as part of Google's annual I/O Conference last week, a news item that slipped through the cracks was that Adobe released a native PDF reading app for Android phones.

It packs multitouch gestures for zooming, landscape orientation, and a tool that will resize the text on wide documents to fit your phone's narrow screen.

After a quick spin with the software on … Read more

The handset-maker already plans to make Froyo available via an update before too long. Slashgear reached out to Motorola over the weekend in hopes of getting it to open up about the latest version of the platform. Not surprisingly, the company was somewhat vague in its response.

We're excited to see Google's news of the next version of the … Read more

Google vs. Apple in the battle of the fanboys

Something strange happened last week at Google I/O, Google's big developer event. Google may have attained cult status. There was an energy in the halls normally reserved for Apple events like WWDC, as 5,000 attendees chattered about Google TV, Android, WebM, and more.

Google is ascendant, and it may take the fanboys with it.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs may believe there's "not a chance" that Google is leapfrogging Apple, and assures the faithful that "[they] won't be disappointed" at WWDC, but worrisome signs abound for the iconic technology company.
