T-Mobile tipped to offer Nexus 5 on November 20

T-Mobile could offer the LG Nexus 5 across all sales channels as soon as November 20, reports TmoNews.

Pricing details are still up in the air, but we should hope for something close to what's listed in the Google Play Store: 16GB for $349, 32GB for $399.

Also of particular note, November 20 could see the carrier introduce a number of incentives for LG and Samsung, and Black Friday offers -- perhaps sales incentives for reps or customer promotions to spur holiday sales. T-Mobile often drop prices to zero dollars down during its sales, which could take between $100 … Read more

How to record your screen on Android 4.4 KitKat

With Android 4.4 KitKat having launched with the Nexus 5 we are still digging through the new features for developers and users alike. One of the features included in the latest Android OS is the ability to record the screen of your device. This feature is intended for developers who want to spruce up Play Store listings with a video walk-through of an app. But I see no reason that developers should be the only ones to take advantage of this awesome feature.

Before I dive into how to record the screen of your Android device, you need to … Read more

Nexus 5 proves easy to repair, says iFixit

The Nexus 5 has received a good grade for repairability from the folks at iFixit.

Spelunking its way through the innards of the new Nexus, iFixit found most of the teardown trip relatively carefree. The panels are stuck together with plastic clips rather than glue, making the removal much easier. Alas, the bottom of the case did sport some adhesive, but that was quickly removed through one of iFixit's magic tools.

The antennae for the Wi-Fi, MIMO, and GPS are nicely labeled to prevent any confusion. The battery is held in place by just the right amount of glue. … Read more

Galaxy Nexus owners petition for taste of KitKat

Google has revealed that Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone will not receive the Android 4.4 update. But one Nexus owner isn't taking that lying down.

An enterprising Galaxy Nexus owner named Max Duckwitz recently launched a Change.Org petition urging Google to reconsider its decision. Apparently, others feel the same way. The petition has garnered more than 14,000 supporters.

On Monday, Duckwitz said he printed and mailed all of the petition signatures and comments along with a brief letter and the text of the petition. The entire package is addressed to Google Senior Vice President and Android … Read more

iPad Air topped by Kindle Fire HDX in display quality test

The iPad Air is getting plenty of rave reviews, but Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX just took it in a display shootout.

When DisplayMate Technologies tested the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, the iPad Air, and Google's Nexus 10, the Fire 8.9 "leapfrogged into the best-performing tablet display that we have ever tested," according to the results posted Monday.

The Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 significantly outperformed "the iPad Air in brightness, screen reflectance, and high ambient light contrast, plus a first-place finish in the very challenging category of absolute color accuracy," DisplayMate continued. … Read more

Nexus 5 ship time slips to 3 to 4 weeks

Looking to buy the new Nexus 5? You may now have to wait up to a month, at least if you want the unlocked version through Google Play.

The 16GB and 32GB black version and the 16GB white version available unlocked from Google all now show a ship time of 3 to 4 weeks as of Monday morning. Consumers who'd be happy with the 32GB white model face a wait of 2 to 3 weeks.

And these shipping estimates could certainly fluctuate.

Google officially unveiled the new Nexus 5 on October 31. Around an hour after the launch, the … Read more

Get a first-gen Nexus 7 tablet for $139

I know it's not Tablet Tuesday, but this seemed too good to pass up.

Today only, and while supplies last, Staples has the first-generation Google Nexus 7 tablet (16GB) for $139 shipped (plus sales tax where applicable). It's new, not refurbished, and the lowest price I've seen on this much-ballyhooed model.

Last year, Android fanboys went gaga over the Nexus 7 (as did CNET), lauding its sharp screen, great battery life, and overall design.

Personally, I can't say I fully understand the appeal, except perhaps that this is among the few "pure" Android tablets, … Read more

With no new Nexus 10, iPad has few rivals in high-end tablets

Apple may be seeing an army of rivals jumping into the tablet business, but the iPad is still largely standing by itself when it comes to the category of large premium products.

Last week's debut of the Nexus 5 smartphone -- and not a new Nexus 10 tablet -- suggests that Google is ceding the market for high-end tablets to Apple as it focuses on budget-friendly mobile devices. If nothing else, it knocks out the iPad's biggest competitor.

The Nexus 10 was supposed to take on the larger iPad with updated software, super-crisp display, and faster processor. CNET … Read more

How Google is beating Apple in the fight for emotions

You may well have been having conflicted feelings over the last couple of years.

On the one hand, you know that Google is, at its core, an engineering company whose aim is to get your hands off the steering wheel and implant its search engine into your brain.

On the other, you're finding yourself feeling rather warm about Google, as if whatever the company says ultimately sounds mellifluous -- even if, at heart, it's menacing to your very being.

There's a reason for this. A company that once derided advertising as something beneath dwarf-tossing has embraced various … Read more
