Review: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014

Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 returns as a top-notch security suite with improved overall performance, a slight interface refresh, and new countermeasures against zero-day attacks.

Since last year's release, Kaspersky 2014's design comes with minimal changes to its interface. The mobile-style drawer also makes a return, which reveals extra tools like parental controls, network monitoring, and application controls.

The extraneous arrows and flap-like carousel buttons have all been consolidated into a single-drawer button, following Windows 8-like behaviors. The main interface has been stripped down even more for a much cleaner, uncluttered look.

Menus and settings have also gotten a … Read more

Review: Protect your PC with COMODO Antivirus

Like previous releases, COMODO's free antivirus solution for Windows offers solid full-time antivirus protection and basic features comparable to similar freeware, including a desktop widget, firewall protection, Game Mode, drag-and-drop submission of suspicious apps for analysis, and cloud-based definitions, but it also comes with some unique extras, such as the COMODO Dragon secure Web browser, which is free, and the optional Geek Buddy support service, which requires a paid license.

Installing COMODO Antivirus involves several options, such as enabling cloud-based analysis of suspicious programs, which we accepted, and COMODO's free Secure DNS Server option, which we declined because … Read more

Review: iAntivirus for Mac scans and protects your computer from malware

Developed by the company known for Norton, a popular antivirus and security software, iAntivirus for Mac performs well as a basic malware protection program with useful scanning and identification features. While it takes some time to complete the initial scans, the program does examine almost every part of the computer, helping to ensure that problems aren't lurking on your system.

After installing, the program asks the user to complete a full system scan, which takes several minutes to complete. The main window is well designed, with advanced graphics and labels, making it very easy to use. In the upper-right … Read more

Review: Bitdefender Security is faster and better

Bitdefender Antivirus continues to remain a top-performing security suite that improves over time by adjusting to your computer usage and performance.

Bitdefender's latest version sheds the yearly version identity and brings back the same expected arsenal of security tricks and tweaks that made version 2013 so competitive among the AV crowd. Features like MyBitdefender return to address the rising demand for multidevice protection as many other rivals like Norton and AVG have followed suit.

Bitdefender's cost has gone up for each of its products across the board: Antivirus Plus now retails for $49.95, Internet Security for $69.… Read more

Review: Protect your PC with full-featured (but free) NANO AntiVirus

NANO Security's NANO AntiVirus is a relatively new entry into the huge market for free antivirus programs. Like the competition, it offers comprehensive, up-to-date protection from computer viruses, Trojans, malware, and suspicious programs. It monitors Web traffic, checks your e-mail, and keeps a tab on system activity in real time. It also scans RAM for infections and can even detect viruses in encrypted and compressed files such as archives and backups. Unlike many other free antivirus packages, it doesn't limit the features available in the freeware to get you to buy a premium version: All of its functionality … Read more

Bitdefender drops the number and goes Photon on your PC

Photon was actually introduced earlier in Bitdefender 2013, but since then the company has made major improvements while minimally impacting performance. Now, Photon officially becomes its own product component.

Bitdefender Total Security also introduces an online credential aid called Wallet. Not … Read more

John McAfee's (insane, NSFW) tips for uninstalling McAfee

In the past year, estranged antivirus kingpin John McAfee has been accused of being many things -- madman, drug addict, and murderer, just to name a few -- but as the video below proves, you certainly can't accuse him of taking himself too seriously.

In the very NSFW four-minute clip, McAfee slams the software he created (but has had not contact with for more than a decade, as he points out) for its tendency to update itself at the most inconvenient times and ultimately offers an, uh, unorthodox method for uninstalling it.… Read more
