Halo to hit Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 in July

The famous Halo game series is making its first assault onto Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 in July.

Known as Halo: Spartan Assault, the $6.99 app is the latest in the Halo franchise, but was designed exclusively for Microsoft's PC and mobile operating systems. As such, people can play the game on a touch-screen device by tapping and swiping their fingers or on a computer by using a traditional mouse and keyboard.

"With Halo: Spartan Assault, we wanted to take Halo out of the living room and create a brand new experience that was built specifically … Read more

Windows 8.1 to let you secure folders with your fingerprint

Windows 8.1 will have a couple of tricks up its sleeve for people who use fingerprint readers.

One of Monday's sessions at Microsoft's TechEd conference highlighted the support that Windows 8.1 will offer for fingerprint recognition, as described by The Verge. Prior versions of Windows handled fingerprint readers through third-party software. But Windows 8.1 will be the first edition of Windows to natively support the technology.

Users will be able to log into their PCs via a Microsoft Account, purchase apps, and open different programs with a swipe of the finger. They'll even be … Read more

Windows Phone to own 12 percent of smartphone market by 2017

Microsoft's Windows Phone will account for 12.7 percent of all global smartphone shipments in another four years, Canalys said in a forecast released Tuesday.

The growth from just 2.4 percent in 2012 means that Windows Phone will capture third place among all smartphone platforms in 2017, just behind Apple's iOS. To obtain that growth, Microsoft will require an assist not just from Nokia but from Chinese vendors such as Lenovo, Huawei, and ZTE, according to Canalys.

"Nokia is the most active vendor in the Microsoft camp and it continues to make steady progress with its … Read more

Analyst: Xbox One to cost $399, PlayStation 4 priced at $349

When Microsoft's Xbox One goes on sale before the end of year, it should cost $399, $50 more than the Sony's PlayStation 4, likely to debut at the same time, according to estimates by Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

The analyst made his estimates in a research note prepared in advance of next week's E3 video game conference. He based those estimates on the cost of materials needed to build the consoles, taking into account speculation about the specifications for each box.

Pachter also took into account the launch prices for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. … Read more

Windows Phone wins 5.6 percent of U.S. smartphone sales

Microsoft's Windows Phone continues to gain traction in the competitive smartphone arena.

Windows Phone is even winning former Android users, according to Kantar. Among people who bought a Windows Phone in the last year, 23 percent jumped ship from Android, while 25 percent upgraded from another Windows Phone and 42 percent moved up from a … Read more

Microsoft to cut Windows RT cost for vendors, says report

Microsoft may trim the prices it charges tablet vendors for Windows RT.

Citing "people with knowledge of the matter," Bloomberg reported Monday that the price cuts would be aimed at Windows RT running on smaller tablets. The goal is to prod more manufacturers to launch Windows RT devices, which haven't exactly seen blockbuster sales.

The new pricing is confidential, Bloomberg's sources said. But any drop in the cost of Windows RT for vendors would trigger lower prices for tablet consumers.

"You need more breadth of equipment manufacturers making the devices, you need lower prices, you … Read more

Ballmer at work on Microsoft restructuring, report says

Microsoft, a software giant since the dawn of the PC era, might not be so focused on software much longer.

CEO Steve Ballmer is in the process of managing a "major restructuring" that would shift his company's center of balance, All Things Digital's Kara Swisher is reporting on Monday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of Microsoft's plans. Rather than base its business on software, as it has since its inception, Microsoft would transition to a "devices and services company," Swisher's sources say.

Ballmer might have already laid the groundwork for … Read more

Microsoft's Windows XP is still kickin' -- do you use it?

Microsoft's XP operating system is still used on more than a third of the installations out there, according to figures from Net Applications. Is it really still that popular?

On Friday, figures from Net Applications (see graph at bottom) showed XP with a robust 37.74 percent of all Windows and Mac OS installations worldwide, down only slightly from 38.31 percent in April. … Read more
