'Pintsized' malware bypassed GateKeeper to affect tech companies

New findings show the recent malware attack that affected employees of Facebook, Apple, and Twitter was able to do so in part by bypassing Apple's GateKeeper security system in OS X.

Apple debuts new $1,099 21.5-inch iMac for schools

Avoiding all fanfare, Apple appears to have quietly unveiled a new version of its low-end iMac. This machine is for educational institutions only, which can snap it up for $1,099 saving $200 over the regular model.

It's unclear when Apple debuted the new iMac on its education institution Apple store, but according to MacRumors it appears to have been very recently. The tech news site says that the $1,099 version has replaced the earlier $999 iMac for educational institutions -- which was launched more than a year and a half ago.

iMac ship times drop to one to three days

Consumers who order an iMac in the U.S. should now see it at their doorstep in just one to three business days.

Shipment times for both sizes of Apple's all-in-one desktop eased up on Saturday following a previous lengthy delay. On Friday, Apple's online store had been showing ship times of three to four weeks for the 27-inch edition and two to three weeks for the 21.5-inch model.

Mac sales should recover after December drop, analyst says

Sales of Apple's Mac should bounce back this month following a dismal December, according to Needham analyst Charlie Wolf.

For 26 quarters in a row, Mac shipments grew faster than those of PCs. But that record came to an end in December when Mac shipments fell by 22 percent compared with an overall industry drop of just 6.6 percent.

Wolf said in an investors note released today:

Apple issues Java update after security breach

Following recent security breaches that led to computers at Apple and other companies being compromised, Apple has issued an update for Java on OS X to close the hole.

The update went live this afternoon through Apple's Software Update service, which can be accessed from the Apple menu, and also available as a standalone update for OS X Snow Leopard or later from the following locations:

Apple plans Q3 launch for MacBook Air with Retina -- report

Apple's MacBook Air could be next to get Retina display treatment, according to a new report.

The Mac maker is planning to bring the Retina display to the MacBook Air in the third quarter of 2013, Taiwan-based newspaper Economic Daily is reporting today, citing sources in the company's supply chain. The Retina display will come bundled in both the 11- and 13-inch MacBook Air models, according to the report.

Apple pulls Mac Pro from online stores in Europe

Consumers in Europe looking for a Mac Pro are now out of luck, at least when trying to buy one online.

Apple's online stores in the U.K., Italy, Germany, France, and other European countries show all three editions of the Mac Pro as "currently unavailable."

The news isn't exactly a surprise. Apple told European retailers and distributors last month that it would stop selling the Mac Pro come March 1 due to new safety regulations. The regulations impose certain electrical requirements, and the Mac Pro's ports and fans aren't in compliance.
