What's in the future for Funny or Die?

Funny or Die, the comedy site co-founded by actor Will Ferrell, rose to fame a year ago with a wildly popular video called "The Landlord." Plans for the site are growing as fast as Ferrell's fro.

On Wednesday, the site snagged an equity investment from HBO. Funny or Die, which already had the backing of Sequoia Capital, also will also produce 10 half-hours of programming for HBO as part of the deal.

The HBO pact is part of a larger plan to turn the site--and the Or Die Network's group of sites--into "premium brands" … Read more

NewTeeVee Station filters Web video

My friend Om Malik is becoming a video impresario. This week he launched NewTeeVee Station, a companion site to NewTeeVee that includes editorial reviews of Web videos by Liz Shannon Miller, formerly of Variety and the Daily Reel. Readers are also encouraged to add their reviews and ratings, and NTV Station is also building up a database of cast, crew and other information about the videos selected from the vast array of video content pouring online--10 hours per minute on YouTube. It could be a good companion to our own TV.com, which covers everything on that old but persistent … Read more

Hell's Kitchen video game (Get sworn at by Gordon Ramsay!)

Gordon Ramsay is one of my favorite celebrity chefs, and when I learned there was a video game of his semi-stupid reality game show Hell's Kitchen I was very excited. Overall, I find the Hell's Kitchen show to be a bit annoying but I love Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. And I think his cooking is fantastic despite the fact that he is clearly insane.

In the game, you're put in charge of Hell's Kitchen restaurant. You progress through five weeks as you rank up from dishwasher to senior chef. You are both cooking in the kitchen … Read more

Surprise! Stewart and Colbert have come to Hulu

This post was updated at 11:01 AM PT on Tuesday to clarify wording: television content from Viacom is almost exclusively handled by MTV Networks.

In an unexpected move, video site Hulu will be getting some political loudmouths just in time for the 2008 presidential election: Comedy Central's late-night personalities Jon Stewart of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report.

We had to check and make sure the press release wasn't a joke, but there are indeed full episodes from both programs available. It comes as somewhat of a surprise, considering Comedy … Read more

Universal Music U.K. to debut series on Bebo

At the many advertising conferences dotting Internet Week New York this week, speakers and panelists have been exhorting the ad industry to start thinking more creatively when it comes to tackling digital media--even creating elaborate branded series in lieu of traditional commercials.

They weren't the only ones who got that memo. Record label Universal Music Group's Universal Music U.K. announced Monday that it's partnered with social network Bebo to broadcast a series called The Secret World of Sam King: one part video blog, one part Choose Your Own Adventure, and one part Universal advertorial. It's … Read more

Y-cam Black: Internet cams need not suck

We've seen our fair share of Internet video cameras in our time, and the one thing they all have in common is the fact they're all either rubbish, broken in some way or just plain ... sucky.

One Internet video camera that doesn't fall into any of these categories is the Y-cam. Not only is it flippin' gorgeous and built like a brick house, but it's also packed with features and extremely easy to set up--something rival camera manufacturers should note.

The Y-cam connects to networks via Ethernet--you'll have to supply your own cable, unfortunately--or via … Read more

Portable arcade tabletops of the '80s

The year was 1983--the last De Loreans were produced, the final episode of M.A.S.H. aired with more than 125 million viewers tuning in to watch, the "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign debuted, Jaws went 3D (don't know why), and the A-Team released so much ammunition without ever hitting anyone--Oh, What a Feeling!

This time portal has been initiated because I've dug something up from my closet. Not a skeleton, but a working 1983 original Game & Watch Nintendo Popeye tabletop system. For those who don't know how the Nintendo tabletop models worked, … Read more

Who's afraid of online video? Not Michael Eisner

NEW YORK--As head of Web video studio Vuguru, longtime entertainment exec Michael Eisner has been on a sort of tent-revival tour for the past few years, preaching the gospel of Internet video. On Thursday, his audience was the ad industry, and he was there to tell them not to be fazed by disappointing revenues on Web video.

"I'm seeding what I think will be a future business," Eisner explained. He's been vocal in admitting that online video isn't a profitable business yet. But it will be, he emphasized, and he wanted to position himself to … Read more
