Get two Kindle Fire HDX Origami cases for $9.98

Never, ever pay full price for smartphone or tablet accessories. If you walk into, say, an Apple Store or Best Buy in search of a case or sync/charge cable, you're going to pay a huge markup. You'll also find a much smaller selection than you would online.

Take, for example, the Amazon Origami Case for Kindle Fire HDX. It's awesome, as it not only covers the screen, but also folds into various configurations that stand the tablet in portrait or landscape orientation. Alas, it's $55.

If you happened to grab an HDX the other day … Read more

Windows 8.1 update may be delayed until April

I've heard from two of my sources in the past week that Microsoft's ship target for Windows 8.1 Update 1 has shifted from March 2014 to April 2014.

The idea remains to use Patch Tuesday to distribute the coming so-called "Spring" update via Windows Update, my sources said. If that is the case, Windows 8.1 Update 1 should be pushed to users on April 8, rather than March 11.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is a collection of features and fixes for Windows 8.1. Most of the new features are aimed at making … Read more

Microsoft could give you $250 in credit for your phone or tablet

Microsoft has a new trade-in deal designed to get you to shop at its retail stores.

Running from February 2 through March 2, or while supplies last, the trade-in offer promises up to $250 in Microsoft Store credit for a mobile phone or tablet. The offer seems open to any device though it has to meet certain criteria.

The device must power on and be fully functional. No broken or missing parts or cracks on the screen or housing. No liquid damage. No password protection. (Hmm, that one seems like a no-brainer.) And it must include all of its original … Read more

Tablet Tuesday: Get a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for $189 shipped

When it comes to tablet innovation, Amazon is beating the pants off Apple. That's right, I said it. (Pardon me while I duck to avoid flaming arrows.)

More on that in a bit. For now, this: For a limited time, you can get the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet for $189, shipped. Regular price: $269. And it's new, not refurbished.

Amazon's Fire HDX models are also on sale: the 7-inch Fire HDX for $199, shipped, and the Fire HDX 8.9 for $339, savings of $30 and $40, respectively. But to my thinking the $189 … Read more

Hey, business users, the Samsung Galaxy TabPro could be your next tablet

With its Galaxy TabPro 12.2, Samsung takes direct aim at Microsoft, the Surface 2, and the productivity tablet market. Thanks to its huge bounty of business apps, the TabPro can easily challenge the Surface 2 as the best ARM-based productivity tablet and may even be able to surpass it.

It's taking a slightly different trail than Microsoft's to get there, and though I haven't spent nearly enough time with the TabPro just yet -- look for a full review later this month -- its appeal as a business tablet is crystal-clear.

Back up your Schemer data and use these alternatives

Google will be shutting down Schemer on February 7, 2014. After this date, all accounts and their associated data will be deleted. That means it's time to back up your schemes before they're wiped from existence.

You may have received an e-mail with a link to export your data. If you didn't, you can do the export at this link. You'll be directed to log-in to the Schemer Web site and request a copy of your schemes, which will be delivered by e-mail. Google says that the backup copy may take 24 hours … Read more

Archos reveals trio of Neon tablets

Archos this week quietly introduced a new family of Neon tablets. Ranging in size from 9 inches to 10.1 inches, the slabs are similar to the company's Carbon and Cobalt lines. Unfortunately, these new Neon tablets are on the lower end.

On the smaller end of the scale, we have the Archos 90 Neon, which features a 9-inch display, but at only a 800x480-pixel resolution, about the same resolution as your typical 4-inch Android smartphone.

Running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, it houses a 1.4GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage with microSD expansion. … Read more

Apple applies for 'smart bezel' patent for iPads

Apple has applied for a patent that would turn the bezel around an iPad screen into a smart area capable of adding functionality to the slate.

According to Patently Apple, which earlier reported on the patent application, the technology includes so-called "force sensors" that are sitting at the corners of the black bezel around a tablet display. Along the bezel, Apple would also have sensors around the bezel that would identify both pressure and location and perform an action.

The filing, which CNET also reported about here, is an interesting one. Although Apple's iPad had somewhat large … Read more
