iPhone 5C sales may affect China Mobile deal -- analyst

Apple and China Mobile are close to signing a deal to launch the iPhone, says analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, but sluggish sales of the iPhone 5C may alter the terms.

Speculation has run rampant that the two companies had already inked a deal, especially after the iPhone 5S and 5C appeared on preorder pages for China Mobile. But the carrier's chairman, Xi Guohua, said this week that nothing has been finalized though the two have been talking about a partnership.

That deal is close to being signed, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said yesterday in an investors report obtained by … Read more

Japan's Iosys clones the iPhone 5C, slaps on Android

The iPhone has a big following in Japan these days. So, why not tap into the 5C aesthetic with an Android phone?

That appears to be the thinking of Japan's Iosys, which will market the ioPhone5 on Friday, according to a report at Ascii.jp, a major Japanese tech site, and other Japanese sites.

Aside from the Android 4.2 OS, the biggest differences appear to be price and specs.

Ascii was kind enough to post a comparison chart for the ioPhone5 -- which, in effect, is a colorful shell on top of an Android phone -- and the … Read more

Apple's very happy holiday season

As 2013 draws to a close, Tim Cook has to be smiling.

Earlier this year it seemed that Apple would take a fall. Samsung and rest of the Android players were gaining momentum and share as Apple was slow to update its product portfolio and was seeing its profit margins decline. The stock went from from above $700 in September 2012 to below $400 in July 2013. Following the fall introduction of new products and good sales numbers for the holiday shopping season, however, the stock has climbed back above $560.

Perhaps Cook has been smiling all year, knowing that … Read more
