Nokia Lumia 520 review: One of the best budget phones around

When Nokia first unveiled its Nokia Lumia 520 this past February, the Windows Phone proved that Nokia could achieve new lows.

That's only when it comes to price, though, not features. As CNET UK discovered while fully reviewing the Lumia 520, Nokia has managed to create a very inexpensive handset that will sell in the U.K. for about 100 pounds at full retail price.

In U.S. currency, that translates to just under $200 without a contract. Luckily for us Yankees, a variant of this 520 is coming to T-Mobile in May, off-contract, as the Nokia Lumia 521.… Read more

Nokia Lumia 720 review: Sleek, but not the best value in town

With all the Nokia Lumia phones out and about right now, it's hard to keep track of what's what. Luckily, CNET UK's Andrew Hoyle puts the Nokia Lumia 720 into perspective in his full review of the midrange smartphone.

The Windows 8 phone looks sleek and familiar, more akin to Nokia's high-end Lumia 920 than the upper-midrange 820 series. It offers more than the forthcoming 520 and budget 620, but not so much over these latter two that wallet-watchers should lose focus.

In other words, the decent camera, user-friendly interface, and bevy of Nokia-only apps do … Read more

T-Mobile will sell budget Nokia Lumia 521 in May

T-Mobile announced this morning that it will soon carry the Nokia Lumia 521, a variant of the Nokia Lumia 520 that the company announced in February at Mobile World Congress.

That T-Mobile would carry a version of the phone is nothing new, but now we know that the phone will be available sometime in May at Walmart and Microsoft stores in addition to T-Mobile's Web site and stores.

T-Mobile isn't answering questions about pricing details just yet, but Nokia said it will sell the 520 unlocked for just 139 euros without a contract. That works out to about $… Read more

Successor to Nokia Lumia 920 reportedly in the works

A new Nokia is on the cards and this one could strip the Nokia Lumia 920 of its flagship status. Allegedly called the Lumia 928, photos and the scantest of details were leaked via Twitter user @evleaks.

Headed for Verizon, the 928 is reportedly a slightly tweaked version of the 920. So what's the difference? According to The Verge, the two look very similar, but the 928 has a longer flash on the back. The 928 would also be slightly thinner, measuring 10.2mm at its thinnest point and 11.2mm at its thickest, with a slightly curved back, … Read more

Nokia brings Music app to Windows 8, RT

Nokia today launched its music app for Windows 8 and RT tablets and PCs, extending the Finnish handset maker's reach in the mobile market.

The free music streaming app, Nokia Music, first appeared on Nokia Lumia smartphones, and Nokia in January enhanced the service to include a premium version, dubbed Nokia Music+, for a monthly subscription fee of $3.99. With both, users are able to create their own mixes or stream from playlists curated by Nokia's team and artists. Mixes also can be saved for offline playback. The premium version gives users unlimited skips and unlimited downloads.… Read more

Nokia shutters its flagship China store

Nokia has closed its flagship store in China, once touted as its largest worldwide.

Nokia told ZDNet that the Shanghai store, which opened in 2007, shut down at the end of March. CNET also confirmed the closure.

"For a while now, Nokia has been focusing on growing its presence in operator and third-party retail outlets, rather than through our own physical stores," according to a company representative. "We are, of course, also continuously beefing up our online presence."

Nokia is shuttering the store even as it presses further to regain lost ground in China, considered one … Read more

Pictures of possible early Nokia Lumia 950 leaked

Could this be one of the next Nokia Lumias that'll be hitting the market soon?

According to Windows Phone Central, the above image may be a picture of an early (and rather drab) prototype model of the Lumia 950.

The site further goes on to note that its possible specs include an AMOLED touch screen with a 1,280x768-pixel resolution, 2GB of RAM, and an extended battery life.

We here at CNET have to throw our hats in and say that this photo looks like a no-go. And personally, I think it looks more like a midlevel LG Optimus … Read more

T-Mobile to Lumia 810 users: No LTE for you

Nokia Lumia 810 owners hoping for an update to 4G LTE are out of luck.

The Lumia 810's hardware can support both HSPA+ and LTE; however, T-Mobile has confirmed that an update to LTE isn't going to happen -- at least not at this point, according to a statement sent to CNET today:

While the Nokia Lumia 810 features a chipset, which provides the hardware capability to support both HSPA+42 and LTE, the device will not automatically access our LTE network and, at this time, it will not receive an update to do so.

T-Mobile is committed … Read more

April Fools' 2013: From Twttr to Google Nose to Nokia's microwave

You probably know this already, but today is April Fools' Day.

And the pranks, they are a-comin'. This year's batch of springtime hijinks from the greater tech community includes the usual onslaught from Google, along with notable entrants from Nokia, Sony, and others. Without further ado, here are some of the highlights.

• While it waits for its Lumia smartphones to build up a head of steam, Nokia is showing off a touch-screen microwave oven, the Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation, which features a Window Phone-like interface ("which can be operated with oven mitts"). Not to be outdone by Samsung … Read more

India hits Nokia with demand for $338M in back taxes

Nokia confirmed today it has been slapped with a demand for back taxes by Indian tax authorities.

According to Reuters, the Finnish phone maker was hit with a demand for income taxes 20.8 billion rupees ($383 million) going back five fiscal years.

It comes only a month after one of Nokia's factories in India was raided by the country's tax authorities.

The tax demand was issued on March 15. A stay has been placed on the demand, though, allowing Nokia to appeal the decision.

Nokia responded to Reuters' request for comment with a statement that "it … Read more
