CodeCombat: Learn to code through dungeon crawling

Looking at a bunch of code for the first time can be something of a daunting affair. All those strings and symbols can simply look like a mess to the untrained eye, and can be a bit off-putting to anyone who's toying with the idea of learning how to code. It's not nearly as difficult as it looks, however -- if only one can find the right delivery method.

Codecademy does a pretty good job, but one group of programmers wanted to make it a little more accessible. Enter CodeCombat, a browser-based game where your in-game actions are dictated by the Javascript code commands you type. … Read more

Maker builds real-life Flappy Bird in a box

It was a tale of gaming woe. Casual gamers got addicted to the Mario-esque game Flappy Bird. The creator pulled it from app stores. Flappy Bird clones flooded the market, but many of them were nixed by the app stores. Fawn Qiu's version of the game, however, won't be axed from any app stores. It's a real-life, physical version.

Qiu's Flappy Bird in a box uses a scrolling background with two controls to move the bird up and down to avoid obstacles. If you screw up, the box lid will close on you and play a "game over" sound. It's easy to get started, but hard to master, just like the original game.… Read more

What are the two most popular things in the world? You have 5 seconds to answer.

No, it's not Candy Crush and Kim Kardashian. But you're close. It's Flappy Bird and Miley Cyrus.

Candy Crush Saga maker King files for IPO

King Digital Entertainment, a digital-gaming provider perhaps best known for its Candy Crush Saga title, has filed papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to go public.

King's statement with the SEC is exceedingly short on details, due mainly to the company still needing to decide how many shares will be offered, who will be offering those shares, and when it will go public. However, the filing statement does indicate that nearly 120 million shares were outstanding as of 2013. It's not clear how many of those will be offered to the public. If King follows through … Read more

Apple, Google reportedly grounding 'Flappy Bird' clones

Apple and Google reportedly have cracked down on apps that appear to be trying to capitalize on the "Flappy Bird" phenomenon, the addictive game that was removed from app stores earlier this month.

Clones of the popular game began appearing in the app stores not long after Dong Nguyen, the app's creator, removed the popular game from app stores on February 9, saying that he was overwhelmed by the game's popularity. But now those app stores have started rejecting games with "flappy" in the title that appear to be clones of the original game, … Read more
