Power Mac 54xx/55xx conflict with CTX projector: a solution

John Bickerton had a conflict between a Mac 5500/225 and CTX EzPro 500 LCD projector. CTX tech support offered the solution. John writes: "CTX knew all about the problem. They sent (no charge) a Mac adapter for the External Video Connector that has built in dip switches. It worked! CTX also said that PowerR makes their version of the External Video Connector which also solves the problem. CTX indicated that this incompatibility is also found in the 5400 series."

If you can't get the sound from your audio CDs...

A Hot Topic item on Apple's Discussion Boards deals with problems getting sound from an audio CD played on a Mac.various points are covered. Here is one tidbit that caught my eye (confirming a previous report here at MacFixIt): "Under OS 8, there is a specific issue with Power Macintosh 6100, 7100, and 8100 models, where the Monitors & Sound control panel does not retain this setting through a restart. To deal with this, you can add the Sound control panel via a Custom Install (or it may already be in your Apple Extras folder), and use … Read more

Problem (and solution) installing Mac OS 8 on a 7300

Ric Vice kept getting a system crash when trying to install Mac OS 8 on his 7300. Apple Tech Support told him that "in order for the OS 8 Installer to work on the 7300/200, you have to activate AppleTalk via the Apple Talk Control Panel in OS 7.6.1. Otherwise you get the 'System Error Occurred: Address Error' message."

Menu text vanishes in Mac OS 8; the cause and solution

One day, Catherine Kunicki found that all of the text in the Mac OS 8 Finder menus of her Mac had vanished. Since she had just recently installed the Fractal Painter 5.0.3 Updater, she called MetaCreations Technical Support for help.

They said that this is a known general problem. It happens if an application somehow corrupts the Charcoal font used by the menus. A work-around is to to go the Appearance control panel and set the System font to Chicago. Then restart the Mac. Catherine tried it and her menus returned. Reinstalling a fresh copy of the Charcoal … Read more

Updated extensions may solve QuickTake problems

Regarding previously mentioned possible problems with the QuickTake 200, especially with G3 Macs, a reader notes: "I was also getting freezes and crashes while downloading pictures from the QuickTake 200 with the Camera Access software. While there are no updates for the QuickTake software, the QuickTime IC developer's kit has updated versions of the extensions in it. Since installing them, I haven't had any problems."

Update: A reader claims: "Apple has a new version of the QuickTake 200 software that is compatible with the G3 systems. You must call Apple and they will send it … Read more

Warning! If you install Adobe's 8.5.1 printer driver after installing Apple's 8.5.1 printer driver, Apple's driver will no lo

If you install Apple's LaserWriter 8.5.1 printer driver and then install Adobe's 8.5.1 version of the driver, the Apple driver will no longer work. A reader reported this last time (I got the details a bit wrong initially, but have now corrected the item). This problem has now been confirmed by others, including Apple's Paul Danbold, who explained the cause and solution:

Both drivers use the PrintingLib file. "Adobe and Apple have a gentleman's agreement to keep our version numbers different - to avoid installation problems and to make life less … Read more

Apple Technote addresses GDHandles ("Mercutio") bug

Apple has released " Technote 1118: Unlocking GDHandles Considered Harmful." It deals with the Mercutio bug. Much of it is intended for developers. Of interest to end users, it notes that part of the problem will be fixed via a new version of Monitors & Sound. Also: "All users, including developers, should consider installing a system extension which Apple will soon release to address this problem. This extension will protect you from symptoms which result from code which you cannot fix until revised applications appear which do not have the problem. You will be able to obtain this … Read more

Odds & Ends

"Sad Macs" praised in Computer Shopper An article reviewing several books in the December issue of the Computer Shopper states that Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters "leaves no stone unturned, it's a book that's not only enormous but enormously useful...an indispensable reference for any Mac user." It was the only Mac book even mentioned in the article. Hint: It's still not too late to order a copy of Sad Macs for your holiday gift-giving.

DiskEssentials: one more time

Here's the latest update (and what I hope is the last update, at least for awhile) on Total Recall's DiskEssentials ( see previous report):

Customer support issues continue to be a problem. Now that most readers that ordered the 1.1 version are finally receiving it, they report hassles getting the 1.1.1 (or other promised) updates. Total Recall's procedures for obtaining the updates too often leave the user waiting for days or weeks to get an update mailed despite the fact that they can provide a valid serial number. Total Recall now says they are preparing … Read more
