Migration Assistant updated for Snow Leopard to Lion transfers

If you're planning on upgrading to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion tomorrow, you'll want to do a quick software update and be sure you've got Migration Assistant version 1.0 installed.

The update fixes an issue that prevents the migration of data from systems running Mac OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard to systems running Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

The update can be downloaded via Software Update on qualifying machines or directly from Apple.

Mac OS X Lion goes on sale Wednesday

Apple's next version of Mac OS X, dubbed Lion, will go on sale tomorrow, the company's execs said during Apple's second-quarter conference call.

The latest version of the OS has "over 250 new features," the company has said. The OS first made its debut at an event dubbed "Back to the Mac" in October, where the company also launched its second-generation MacBook Air and iLife '11 software.

Will your Mac run OS X 10.7 Lion?

Apple's newest release of OS X is just around the corner, and part of its advancements is that it will not only be Intel-only as was the case with Snow Leopard, but it will also run exclusively in 64-bit mode and therefore require a 64-bit CPU. Unfortunately, this means that some of the early Intel-based Macs will not be able to run Lion when it is released, so if you did purchase one of the first Intel Macs in 2006 (or purchased one second-hand) then you may not be able to install and run OS X 10.7.

Reports: Lion being sent to Apple stores, AppleCare

The shipping version of Apple's Mac OS X Lion is said to be at Apple's stores, and ready to be deployed on showroom floor computers the same day it's released to the public, according to reports.

Macrumors today said a hard drive with the new OS ready to be installed has been delivered to Apple's retail stores. Separately, a report on 9to5mac claimed AppleCare support staff are receiving training for the new OS, as well as having the same final version installed on their own machines.

Synology to release Lion-friendly NAS firmware, add features

Mac users with a NAS server should probably wait a bit before upgrading to OS X 10.7 Lion, due for release later this month.

According to Synology, maker of the highest-rated NAS servers on the market, its DiskStation servers will not work well with Lion, or at least the support for the Time Machine. If waiting for the release of some of Apple's most anticipated products is not your game, the latest rumor from AppleInsider should suit you well. According to its sources, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, as well as new, Thunderbolt-ready MacBook Airs, could be available as early as Wednesday.
