Checkmark offers slick location-based reminders

Apple's Reminders app, introduced in iOS 5, works perfectly well at notifying you according to your time- or location-based criteria. But a new app called Checkmark (99 cents for a limited time) gives you location-based reminders using your GPS and important locations you enter, and with a great-looking interface that's easy to navigate.

You start by adding locations important to you such as Home, Work, the Gym, and a friend's house you often visit. You can locate yourself via GPS, but you also can search for an address on a map and add a location pin that way. The next step is creating reminders based on your locations.… Read more

Apple refreshes iCloud beta with new Web apps

Apple has apparently cooked up Web-based versions of its Notes and Reminders apps, as seen in the latest iCloud beta.

Accessible via iCloud from a PC or Mac, the new apps seem similar to their mobile iOS and Mountain Lion counterparts, according to a review by 9to5Mac.

The Web-based Notes app lets you enter and organize notes and then e-mail them using the iCloud e-mail. The Reminders app allows you to add reminders, attach notes to them, and schedule the date and time for you to be alerted.

Other online surprises are in store for iCloud users.

Mountain Lion shipping in July

Mountain Lion, originally seeded to developers in February, will be available from the Mac App Store in July for $19.99.

Apple's new operating system takes the Mac OS in a new direction, with Apple integrating a number of iOS-inspired features from its mobile devices. Apple SVP Craig Federighi says the new OS has over 200 new features, including notifications, Reminders, Game Center, Documents in the Cloud, and Messages. Many of these features are standalone programs, but some such as the Notification Center and sharing tools are systemwide services. Apple is also enhancing security options with its Gatekeeper technology, … Read more

Gone are the days of keeping track of bills, birthdays, and appointments with pencil and a datebook -- or at least, gone are the days when that was your only option. Multi Reminders is one of many options for maintaining your schedule on your computer. It's not the most sophisticated program we've ever seen, but it does have some interesting features that make it appealing.

Set up color LED alerts on the Galaxy Nexus

The Galaxy Nexus has a hidden LED near the bottom of the glass on the front of the phone. Normally, you'll see it blink white for notifications, but what if you want more information than "you missed something, *blink blink*"? With one app, you can adjust the color of the LED so you can see what you missed at a glance. Additionally, you'll be able to set audible reminders that repeat as often as you tell them to. Here's how to get started:

Step 1: Download and install Light Flow from the Google … Read more

How to set reminders on your iPhone with Do Date

With Do Date, you can add reminders to your iPhone's Notification Center to help you keep track of important dates.

I like the idea of the pull-down Notification Center but I feel that Apple isn't making the best use of this tool. Unfortunately, the Quickpick app that added some great utility to the Notification Center was pulled from the App Store almost immediately after I wrote about it last month. Let's hope Do Date does not meet the same fate.… Read more

With WWDC sellout expected, unofficial ticket notifier arrives

If you were a developer who missed out on nabbing tickets to Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference last year, there's a new solution to make sure that doesn't happen again next year.

Developers Anthony Herron and Aaron Wardle have launched WWDC Alerts, a simple site that promises to give people the heads up when tickets to Apple's yet-to-be-announced 2012 event goes on sale.

"In 2011 it sold out in less than 10 hours. In 2012 it will likely by sooner [sic]," the site says. "WWDC Alerts will notify you via call and SMS … Read more
