Fav.tv unveils its social, interactive TV guide

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--One of the biggest problems for those interested in talking online about their favorite TV shows is the fact that few people watch live anymore.

What often happens instead is that conversations on Facebook, Twitter, or other online social services tend to take place even as some people are trying desperately not to come across spoilers before they watch their programs on TiVo or some other digital video recorder. And at the same time, conversations are disjointed and usually don't help fans get the best and latest information about shows they love.

These are some of … Read more

Lesson from Steve Jobs? Make great products

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--The biggest lesson that Apple board member and longtime Steve Jobs adviser Bill Campbell learned from the former CEO? "Make sure you have great product."

Campbell, known as "Coach" to friends and some peers, may not be as known in the world of technology as he should be. The chairman of the board of Intuit, and an Apple adviser and board member who also has several other high-level tech-industry positions, appeared at the Demo Fall conference here today, in conversation with Bloomberg reporter Brad Stone.

Over the course of a 20-minute rumination on … Read more

Whoops! Hoffman opens both TechCrunch and Demo shows

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--If there's one thing that late night TV hosts like David Letterman and Jay Leno are said to hate, it's when a star books both their shows back to back.

The tech industry doesn't have its own Letterman and Leno rivalry, but one could say that this week's head-to-head TechCrunch Disrupt and Demo Fall shows are a pretty good analogy.

So it was a bit strange to go to both shows this week and see the same high-profile kick-off speaker at each, LinkedIn founder and Graylock Partners principal Reid Hoffman. And both presentations … Read more

preGame 55: Shadows of the Damned; F.E.A.R. 3

This week's game demos are intended for mature audiences only. Viewer discretion is advised.

With Mark back in the preGame lineup, we're set to demo two very dark and creepy titles on today's show. First up is Shadows of the Damned, the collective offspring of an all-star Japanese development team. Talent from such series as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and No More Heroes have collaborated to form a truly unique and remarkably odd tale of a man who must travel through hell to save his girlfriend.

Next up is the third title in the F.E.A.R. series. The tone in F.E.A.R. 3 is creepier than ever, but the game's iconic mechanics--like distinctive slow-motion effects--are still well in tact. Players will be greeted (or terrified) by Alma over and over again as her dark presence still runs rampant through the universe.… Read more

Hewlett-Packard's TouchPad tablet will do Flash video right out of the gate--just in case anyone had any doubts--according to an HP executive who was demonstrating the TouchPad at a Qualcomm conference this week.

The HP WebOS-based TouchPad, due out soon, was front and center at the Qualcomm Uplinq conference in San Diego. Jon Rubinstein, senior vice president at HP's Palm Global Business Unit, spent much of a one-hour keynote address flourishing the TouchPad and talking about its virtues.

One of those virtues is the ability to "run multiple applications at once without slowing down. Multiple screens open … Read more

Nvidia, an emerging power in the world of ARM processors for smartphones and tablets, has published a demonstration game called Glowball the company says shows what can be achieved with its quad-core Kal-El mobile processor project.

With "dynamic lighting," shapes on the ball's exterior casting shadows on stacked barrels, lurking jack-in-the-boxes, hanging rugs, and a creepy clown face.
