Wearable tech from CES 2014

As expected, wearable tech has been garnering a lot of the buzz at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. So far we've seen a slew of new smartwatches and fitness trackers, including the new Steel from Pebble; Core, Sony's tinest wearable yet; and from Razer, Nabu, a wearable tech that actually meshes the two concepts. Check this space for more updates throughout the week.

Apple scores $10 billion in App Store sales for 2013

Apple took home more than $10 billion last year from mobile app sales.

Announcing the news on Tuesday, Apple said that more than $1 billion was generated in December alone. During that time, customers downloaded almost 3 billion apps, making December Apple's most lucrative month since the App Store opened for business.

Developers also have shared in Apple's fortunes, earning a collective $15 billion to date from App Store sales, the company added.

"We'd like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store," Eddy Cue, Apple's senior … Read more

Stratus iPhone game controller also works with the iPad

iOS 7 users will be able to use a new wireless game controller to play games on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

Now up for preorder from SteelSeries, the Stratus Wireless Gaming Controller is designed specifically for iOS 7 devices and offers a layout with controls similar to those found on other iPhone game controllers.

A pressure-sensitive directional pad and four action buttons grace the surface, while four shoulder buttons appear on the edges. Dual analog joysticks, a button to connect to your iOS device via Bluetooth, and an on/off switch round out the package. The Stratus controller … Read more

LG gets fitness-wearable with Lifeband Touch and Heart Rate Earphones (hands-on)

LAS VEGAS -- Sleek, black, wraparound, OLED display. Sounds like a lot of other wearable devices here at CES 2014, but LG's first entry into wearable tech -- the Lifeband Touch -- seems okay with the familiar. Instead of going into the Samsung-style deep end of feature-studded wearables like the Galaxy Gear, the Lifeband feels practical…and very health-oriented. I got to play with it for a brief bit, and at least came away impressed at its build quality. But, what's also cool about the Lifeband Touch is its focus on working in phone notifications and even two-way … Read more

Alcatel OneTouch Idol X, Idol Mini make North American landfall with Virgin, Bell

LAS VEGAS--Alcatel is teaming up with Canadian carriers Bell and Virgin to sell a pair of the company's Android smartphones.

First, there's the One Touch Idol X, a slim, bright, 5-inch 1080p Android phone we first saw at Mobile World Congress almost a full year ago.

Since then, the Idol X has gotten an Android upgrade to version 4.2, which lags two version behind, but will still deliver the meat of what Android does best. In addition, it's equipped with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a 13-megapixel camera, and a microSD slot (32GB) for people who … Read more

Alcatel Pop 7 and Pop 8 bring LTE to cheap tablets

LAS VEGAS -- Alcatel is back with two new tablets coming to North America, but with no actual US release date. The One Touch Pop 7 and Pop 8 are both extremely modestly-spec'ed tablets that appear to focus on their LTE capability over performance. Neither price nor release date have yet been unveiled.

The One Touch Pop 7 is a 7-inch tablet with a 1,024x600 resolution TFT screen. It's not an IPS screen, and its viewing angles are painfully narrow as a result. The tablet houses a 1.3GHz dual-core CPU, a 2-megapixel rear camera, and a … Read more

Alcatel OneTouch Idol X+ gets an eight-core workout (hands-on)

LAS VEGAS-- On Monday, lesser-known smartphone maker Alcatel used CES to officially introduce the Alcatel One Touch Idol X+, its very first eight-core smartphone, and one of the world's first in this category as well.

If the name sounds tongue-twistingly familiar, it's for good reason. The Idol X+ upgrades 2013's One Touch Idol X with the octa-core chipset made by MediaTek.

Unlike Samsung's Exynos 5 processor, which the company unveiled at last year's CES, MediaTek's chipset runs all cores at once, a very different approach to battery management, but one that MediaTek promises will … Read more

Mimicry the best form of flattery? Check out Alcatel's champagne gold Alpha (hands-on)

LAS VEGAS -- Alcatel may sell the gray version of its 4.7-inch OneTouch Idol Alpha smartphone globally, but CES 2014 was the first time this brand-new gold shade strutted its stuff.

Perhaps taking a cue from Apple's subtle champagne iPhone 5S, Alcatel's new Idol Alpha in a similarly pale gold turns out to be a pretty piece of hardware.

Adding to the eye candy are two transparent strips that line the top and bottom. LED lights shine on the navigation icons for Home, Back, and the Menu. Don't let this fool you; the touchpad is actually … Read more
