A sunken Nokia Lumia still works?

This might be a tall story, or even one from the depths. But Roger Nilsson swears it's true.

He is the Swedish man who posted an image of a slightly wrecked Nokia Lumia 800 to the Nokia Sweden Facebook page.

He attached a story to it. As a Windows Phone Reddit posting offered, Nilsson said that the phone had been lost in a lake almost four months prior.

He found it huddling between two rocks at low tide. So, like any humane rescuer, he took it home and looked after it. He cleaned off the algae and the other … Read more

Breakthrough: Nokia surges on Microsoft's home turf

It has been a long time coming, but Nokia finally had a breakout quarter in North America.

The company reported third-quarter results that showed marked progress in North America, traditionally a market it has struggled to crack. Revenue in the region jumped nearly 500 percent to 214 million euros ($293.5 million) year over year, while unit sales increased 367 percent to 1.4 million.

That's good news for Microsoft, which is set to take over Nokia's devices business, bringing its smartphone know-how in house to further augment its Windows Phone business. What small progress Windows Phone has … Read more

Nokia sold 8.8 million Lumia phones in Q3

Nokia sold 8.8 million Lumia phones in the past three months, a 19 percent increase over previous numbers, driven in large part by the success of the wallet-friendly Lumia 520.

The company also appears to be gaining ground in North America. Although Nokia only sold 1.4 million phones in North America this past summer, that's nearly four times as many as this time last year.

Nokia revealed the numbers Tuesday in its third-quarter results for the three months from July to September. Net sales for the third quarter totaled $7.85 billion, as the total number … Read more

Qualcomm: Microsoft's Surface 2 can't compare to Nokia's Windows tablet

Nokia's new Windows RT tablet turns the Finnish handset maker into Microsoft's rival, but at least one Nokia partner says there's really no competition.

Nokia earlier this week unveiled the Lumia 2520, the company's first tablet and the second current device in the market to run Windows RT. The other is Microsoft's Surface 2. Microsoft is in the process of buying Nokia, and the product release puts the two in an awkward position.

But executives at chipmaker Qualcomm say Nokia's tablet has a clear advantage over the Surface 2 in everything from processor speed … Read more

Nokia Lumia 2520 vs. Microsoft Surface 2: Do we need two Windows RT tablets?

After the less-than-stellar debut of Windows RT last year, the subsequent cancellation of Samsung's Windows RT tablet, and Microsoft's $900 million Surface RT write-down, I honestly didn't expect another RT tablet from anyone other than Microsoft to be released, ever. However, earlier this week, Nokia announced its first Windows RT tablet, the Lumia 2520.

Its announcement comes right on the heels of the Surface 2's release, so what better time to compare the merits of each. And while I haven't actually seen the 2520 in person, CNET has. Also, after reading our First Take, speaking … Read more
