Firefox OS sinks its teeth into low-end smartphones

In an impressive first-year achievement, Firefox OS has found a toehold in a fiercely competitive smartphone market. The next challenge for Mozilla's browser-based mobile operating system will be to convert that toehold into a foothold.

As the struggles of BlackBerry OS, Microsoft Windows Phone, and Samsung Tizen have shown, it's extraordinarily hard to find any room in a mobile operating system market where Apple's iOS and Google's Android dominate. Yet Mozilla has managed to do just that by focusing on super-low-cost smartphones and on partnerships with carriers who want something to offer in markets where even … Read more

Firefox to put ads in new tabs

CNET Update only plays Flappy Bert:

Mozilla gets into content creation with Voices

Open jobs for engineers are plentiful at Mozilla, the browser maker, privacy advocate, and open Internet proponent. But the company has only one opening for editor-in-chief, a new role listed only for the past two weeks.

Mozilla, as is the case with many other companies, is getting into what the tech world has come to call with not even a scintilla of irony, "content creation." Not unlike similar positions at other Internet firms, the new role at Mozilla would be to make videos and write blogs, while creating and curating an editorial voice that dovetails with Mozilla's … Read more

Mozilla to sell New Tab page ads in Firefox

Ads are coming to Firefox's New Tab page, browser maker Mozilla announced on Tuesday.

Revealed at the Interactive Advertising Bureau's annual leadership meeting in Palm Desert, Calif., Mozilla said that the ads are part of an attempt to connect new browser users to sites that they might find relevant.

Called Directory Tiles, the initiative will use a combination of sponsored sites, popular sites based on geographic location, and Mozilla ecosystem items to fill in blank New Tab pages. Currently, the nine empty boxes on a new New Tab page fill in over time with sites culled from the … Read more

Search Google anonymously with Firefox add-on Searchonymous

You have a few options to protect the privacy of your Internet searches. You could log out of your Google account before using Google to perform a search. You could use an alternate browser to keep your searches separate from your primary browser. Or you could use a service such as Duck Duck Go. If you are set in your ways (and use Firefox as your primary browser), however, and want to search using Google like the rest of the world and want to do so without logging in and out of your account or switching browsers, there is a … Read more

Firefox's new interface is almost here

Twelve weeks from now, the majority of Mozilla Firefox users will get a massive overhaul to the browser's interface and features. The project, code-named Australis, has been limited to Firefox's nightly builds, but adventurous fans can check out what's in the works with Friday's release of Firefox 29 Aurora.

In development for almost two years, the interface will be the most apparent change. On Windows and Linux, the orange Firefox button in the upper-left corner of the browser is gone, a hallmark since 2011's Firefox 4.

In its place, Mozilla has created a more graphics-friendly … Read more

Firefox for touch screens goes to beta

Firefox fans may not have felt like this week's update to the stable version delivered much, but there's much more to get excited about if you've got a Windows 8 touch screen and are comfortable using Firefox Beta.

Firefox 28 Beta for Windows 8 and 8.1 "Metro" mode debuted Thursday and offers a touch-friendly interface, with pinch-to-zoom, swipes for moving backward and forward through your history, and a tile-based Firefox start screen.

It also has different view modes. Full screen takes up your entire screen, while "snap" turns the browser into a … Read more

Mozilla revamping Firefox OS's app launcher

Firefox OS, Mozilla's smartphone operating system, is getting a new app for launching apps.

"The app integrates the contextual adaptive app search from EverythingMe with the Firefox for Android Web browser to offer users a personalized and customizable Web experience that is fun and intuitive," Mozilla said Wednesday in a blog post. The non-profit organization showed a preview of new app launcher Tuesday.

Firefox OS already used EverythingMe's software for presenting a dynamically generated array of links to Web apps.

Firefox 27 deepens its social integration

On Tuesday Mozilla announced the public release of Firefox 27 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. For this release, Mozilla adds more stacks to its social APIs, bringing new partners like Delicious onboard.

Delicious is a built-in tool that lets users save and organize content from the Web. Now users can access Delicious via the Firefox sidebar.

Web developers can use the new specification "all: unset" in style tags. Prior to the addition of the unset keyword, many developers popularized the use of reset style sheets that individually set all properties to a default value. The CSS keyword &… Read more
