Amazon Studios to begin shooting original series in 4K

As the world moves into higher and higher digital resolution, production companies have to keep up. Amazon Studios appears to be looking to one such company to lead the charge in shooting its television series with 4K technology.

The company announced Monday that it plans to shoot all of its 2014 full-length original series, as well as any new pilots, in 4K ultra HD.

"As a premium original content creator, we're excited about 4K and the future of Ultra HD technology, particularly as we move into drama series next year," Amazon Studios director Roy Price said in … Read more

'Doctor Who' fans petition to rename new planet 'Gallifrey'

"Doctor Who" fans sure know how to work a petition.

Not long after petitioning to have the Empire State Building lit up in Tardis-blue, fans are now pushing to have a newly discovered planet renamed "Gallifrey," in honor of the Doctor's home world.

You don't have to be a "Doctor Who" nut to know this is a good idea. The planet is currently known as "HD 106906 b," which sounds more like a really good password than an actual name. The planet is currently the most distantly orbiting planet around a single Sun-like star that astronomers have been able to identify.

Kobo Arc 10 HD tablet packs a ton of features for readers and weighs like it

The Kobo Arc 10 HD could be a tablet worthy of replacing your bookshelf, if the damn thing didn't feel like holding a bookshelf itself. The 10-inch slate includes useful e-book-centric software that will appease avid readers seeking an Android experience, but its brute force design misses the mark with an uncomfortably heavy and thick build.

It houses a fast Tegra 4 processor, super-sharp screen, and despite its corpulent build, the matte faceted back is actually pleasing to the touch. Its inclusion of a nearly pure version of Android 4.2.2 is only enhanced by Kobo's useful … Read more

Review: Give your Android tablet or phone Apple style with iOS 7 Lockscreen Parallax 3D

Add an Apple-style lock screen to your Android tablet or phone with iOS 7 Lockscreen Parallax HD. This free (but ad-supported) app from Apper Shopper replaces your usual lock screen with a close copy of iOS 7's parallax 3D wallpaper and functionality. With connectivity, battery, and camera buttons discreetly accompanying svelte time, day, and date displays, the Zen-like purity of the iOS design makes a nice alternative to the usual Android clutter -- once you're past some ads, that is.

As we noted, some ads stand between you and iOS 7 Lockscreen's setup options, and again when … Read more

Review: Empress of the Deep 3 Legacy of the Phoenix HD is a very fun adventure game

Empress of the Deep 3 Legacy of the Phoenix HD brings a sense of storytelling and adventure to the iPad that perfectly fits the format. Also available in a smaller iPhone-friendly version, the iPad edition is the way to go, with bigger buttons, easier-to-read menus, and better responses when tapping doors, small buttons, etc.

What makes the Empress of the Deep 3 Legacy of the Phoenix HD edition better than the standard edition for iPhone is also what makes the game good. This is an adventure-style game in the classic sense and while there are plenty of such games for … Read more

Golf to technology: Shove it

The people who run golf often seem like stuffy reactionaries trying to preserve ancient hegemony and its patrician ways.

Which, to a large extent, they are.

However, this can bring with it some welcome side effects.

One appears in a rule change that the game's rulers hope will keep technology a club-length away.

Golf, you see, has some stickly rules. One states that your ball can't move after you've addressed it or while you're removing loose debris around it.

However, viewers at home would use their DVRs and HDTVs to call into major tournaments and complain that a ball had moved. This was especially unfair to the more famous players, as they're more often on TV.… Read more

Review: Basketball Playbook HD Free offers a handful of playbook diagraming tools

Basketball Playbook HD Free provides tools to create playbook entries on a basketball court screen with your iPhone. The result is useful for practicing drawing up plays but without options to save or share your play calls and drawings, the app is little more than a sandbox for testing out new play ideas on the go. That can still be useful for a lot of people, players and coaches alike, but it limits the usefulness of the app.

When you open Basketball Playbook HD Free, you can choose from numerous court designs to display on your screen, and then you … Read more
