Google today announced that its email product has officially embraced a nimbler chat-like compose window, first previewed five months ago, as the default option for penning emails.

The more modern compose window pops out and acts like a chat box, so Gmail users can compose emails while still keeping an eye on other messages in the inbox. The fresh functionality lets people compose multiple messages at the same time, minimize messages like chat threads, and search through the inbox without needing to navigate away from messages.

Google Glass shows off its apps at SXSW

Google is showing off its wearable tech again, this time with an app-filled presentation at South by Southwest Interactive.

The presentation, which Engadget captured in Austin today, showed apps from The New York Times, Evernote, Skitch, and Path.

Of course, there was also a Gmail app. When an e-mail arrives, Google Glass wearers can use voice command to prompt Google's e-mail service to deliver the sender's image and subject line to the glasses' screen. Users can then tell the app what to write back.

Google refreshes mobile Web app to resemble iOS version

Google's Gmail mobile Web app is getting a refresh, the company said.

Google noted on its Google+ page today that Gmail for mobile Web and Gmail Offline now include many new features it added to its iPhone and iPad apps in December. Those changes include improved calendar integration that allows users to see RSVPs inline, and improved search that includes autosuggestions.

Another change is a complete visual refresh, including changes to color, spacing, layout, and avatars (which is a person's Google profile picture or a first initial if he or she doesn't have a profile picture).

Microsoft has confirmed that by no means is it winding down its anti-Google Scroogle campaign. In fact, the company was so pleased with the last two chapters of its crusade that it's gearing up for a third chapter.
