Will the close of Yahoo's first quarter boost pressure to discuss Microsoft bid?

Yahoo's first quarter is coming to a close at the end of the month, potentially increasing pressure on the company to decide whether it will negotiate with Microsoft over its unsolicited buyout bid.

The close of the quarter, after all, will be accompanied by a conference call the company will hold with analysts to discuss its financial results.

"I think the first-quarter earnings will be a hard deadline," said one investment banker. "They'll need to address things like their restructuring initiatives, earnings, and how it would look if they merged with company X, verses remaining … Read more

Microsoft to value Yahoo deal based on all cash?

Cash is king in deal making, and Microsoft's unsolicited bid for Yahoo may be throwing more greenbacks into the mix, according to a report in the New York Post.

The report, citing anonymous sources, says Microsoft is considering changing the way the deal is valued to 100 percent cash.

Under its current offer, Microsoft is valuing the deal using a formula that is based on 50 percent cash and 50 percent Microsoft stock. As a result, the value of Microsoft's offer rises and falls based on the performance of its own stock price.

A quick look at IE8 beta

Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 8 beta 1, but so far it doesn't seem to be the drastic overhaul that Internet Explorer underwent with version 7. That's not to say that there aren't any substantial new features, like the potential for Firefox extension importing, but this beta indicates that Microsoft is building on what they created in the last version, not reinventing their wheel.

Microsoft is promoting the Activities and Web Slices, a "web clips" feature that updates only selected parts of Web sites, such as front-page headlines or eBay auctions. What I found most … Read more

Broader release of IE 8 coming this summer

Updated at 2:30 p.m. PST.

LAS VEGAS--Although anyone can now download the Internet Explorer 8 browser, Microsoft is gearing this release for Web developers. However, a second beta, slated to arrive this summer, is aimed at a wider audience, Microsoft's top browser executive told CNET News.com.

"It's public," general manager Dean Hachamovitch said of the Beta 1 released Wednesday. "It's out on Microsoft.com somewhere. Anyone can download it."

Although features like Web Slices may appeal to consumers, Hachamovitch said that "the (current) beta really is for developers." … Read more

Vudu updates software and hardware offerings as it continues to battle Apple TV

Apple TV has gotten a lot of press since its recent 2.0 upgrade added the ability to rent instant-on movies from all the major studios directly through its onscreen interface. But start-up Vudu--whose set-top box offered all of those features months before Apple's--is still kicking. Just weeks after dropping the price of its entry-level product to $295, the company just rolled out its version 1.3 software, which adds some improved interface and functionality tweaks. Most notably is the "Vudu Vault." The company says that the feature lets users archive some purchased movies (and all purchased … Read more

Microsoft shows IE 8 at Mix

LAS VEGAS--Microsoft offered its first public demonstration of Internet Explorer 8 on Wednesday, a prospect that had general manager Dean Hachamovitch struggling to figure out what to cover.

"I'm so excited that I had to figure out how to focus," he told the crowd. The marketing folks naturally suggested he point to three major advances, but Hatchamovitch disagreed.

"These are developers," he said he told the marketers. "They can count higher than three."

So, instead he said he would talk about eight features: CSS 2.1 support, CSS Certification, performance, start of HTML … Read more
