ABU DHABI, UAE -- Nokia has taken the wraps off new Lumia and Asha devices, including the first tablet from the Finnish company.

With Android phones dominating the mobile world and with Nokia soon to become part of Microsoft, CNET spoke Tuesday with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop here at Nokia World to discuss the launches and Nokia's role with Microsoft. The following is an edited transcript of that conversation.

Q: What do you think is core to Nokia that you would want to bring to Microsoft? Elop: So, a couple of things; the art and science of building a … Read more

Nokia's Lumia 1520 'phablet' isn't a panacea for US struggles

No, going big is not the answer to Nokia's US problem.

Its latest phone, the Lumia 1520, is the next in a growing line of phablets -- jumbo-sized phones named because they appear to be a mash-up of a phone and tablet. It features a larger 6-inch display, a faster quad-core processor, and powerful camera.

It has all the makings of a top-tier flagship smartphone, and could do well in the Asia markets where phablets have been more quickly adopted. Unfortunately, this is not the phone to finally allow Nokia to break through in the US.

Nokia's tablet turns Microsoft from BFF to archrival

Well, this is awkward.

Just hours after Microsoft's Surface 2 became available for sale, Nokia unveiled its own take on a Windows tablet, the Lumia 2520, putting some pressure on its soon-to-be parent company.

As Microsoft fans snapped up the Surface 2 in the US, Nokia introduced the Lumia 2520 alongside a number of jumbo smartphones and low-cost basic handsets halfway around the world in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Microsoft, of course, will eventually absorb Nokia's mobile devices business. But the introduction of the Lumia 2520, which runs the same Windows 8.1 RT operating system as … Read more

DreamWorks' 'Dragon' game reskins Nokia tablet in real time

DreamWorks' new game for the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet may be based around its film "How to Train Your Dragon," but it might as well be called "How to Train Your Children To Take Long Car Rides."

Starting Tuesday, Dragon's Adventure, as the game is called, puts Nokia's Here maps and existing augmented reality software to clever use by building gameplay around the morning commute, or really any road trip or drive.

DreamWorks Animation's film "How To Tame Your Dragon" supplies familiar taloned characters for young kids, aged approximately 7 to … Read more

The tide has turned, dragging in new supersize smartphones with screens larger than 5 inches. Nokia's Lumia 1520, HTC's One Max, and Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 are the three top extra-large handsets sold through US carriers.

Each has its share of strengths and weaknesses that will either line up with your preferences, or disqualify it from your list.

Nokia sold at least 8 million Lumias last quarter, says report

Nokia may be set to report another surge in Lumia sales if a new report from the Wall Street Journal proves true.

That achievement would mark the fourth quarter in a row in which Lumia sales increased both from the immediately preceding quarter and from the same quarter a year earlier.
