Microsoft adds Bitcoin to Bing's currency converter

Microsoft is making it easier to track the Bitcoin's real-time value by adding the crypto-currency to its Bing search results.

Bing users can now compare Bitcoin's value to more than 50 currencies by typing a simple query into the search bar, such as "7 bitcoin to USD" or "Bitcoin to 100 euros," Microsoft announced Monday. Currency conversion is provided through a partnership with Coinbase, a digital wallet that supports Bitcoin trading.

The feature is currently available only to Bing users in the US, Australia, India, and the UK, but Microsoft promises expansion to additional … Read more

Shuttle bus protest hits Microsoft in Seattle

Tech bus protests: They're not just for the Bay Area anymore.

Demonstrations against corporate commuter shuttles, which ferry tech workers to and from Silicon Valley, have become more commonplace in recent months in San Francisco and Oakland. The buses have become a potent symbol of the culture clash between the technology industry and non-tech community, as rents go up and old neighborhoods become gentrified.

Looks like some of that animosity has traveled up to the Great Northwest, though the protest in Seattle was significantly smaller than those in the Bay Area. On Monday, two masked protestors held up a … Read more

According to various news reports, the device will not be able to access the Google Play application store. Instead, it will run services created by Nokia and Microsoft, … Read more

Bill Gates fesses up on Reddit to his one 'expensive guilty pleasure purchase'

"Hello Reddit - I'm Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Microsoft founder. Ask me anything."

And so they did.

Fresh from helping to choose the next CEO to run the company he co-founded nearly four decades ago, Gates descended from the mountaintop to mix it up with the new media masses with his second Reddit appearance in the last year.

Even before the festivities officially got underway, Gates posted a video where he answered a question ahead of time by someone left on the Reddit board asking whether he would pick up … Read more

A dual Windows-Android machine: PC industry savior or non-starter?

It's pretty grim days for the PC industry, and the sector's next hope -- machines that run both Windows and Android at the same time -- may not be enough to save it.

The dual-operating system idea is just the latest attempt by the computer makers to juice sales, which have been on a steady decline: shipments posted their worst-ever drop last year, and on Thursday, Sony said it would exit the PC market. In the newest effort by the industry to revitalize computer sales, PCs would let users access both Android apps and Windows software with just … Read more

10 must-see videos of the week

As the Sochi Winter Olympics officially kick off this week, we're checking out some of the same technology Olympic organizers are relying on to generate snow at a resort in Lake Tahoe. These automated snowmaking systems (some of which can even be operated from a mobile phone) are making it easier and more efficient to make snow when Mother Nature doesn't want to cooperate.

Prizefight is also back at it with an epic rematch between the Roku 3 and third-generation Apple TV. It's been a year since their previous duel and both Editors' Choice streaming boxes have … Read more

Microsoft sends decaying apple to Apple users

I opened my eyes a touch reluctantly this morning and began to read my e-mails in bed.

It was raining outside and the fog was thicker than "War And Peace."

Microsoft, however, wanted to cheer me up. It sent me an e-mail with the subject line: "You deserve something better."

"How sweet," I thought. "I'm not sure I actually deserve something better, but, you know, if you're offering, why would I not listen?"

I eagerly opened the e-mail and then recoiled a touch. For there was a picture of a … Read more

What gaming drought? 7 great games you should be playing right now

I've been hearing it since the new year: "There are no games to play!"

Sure, we seem to have found ourselves in a bit of a lull when it comes to the big blockbuster video game. When I posted what I felt were 2014's most anticipated titles, I may have overlooked the fact that the beginning of 2014 was a bit on the light side for games.

Wrought with guilt that I may have in someway performed a disservice to you fine people, I felt compelled to compile a short list of interactive software worthy of your hard-earned income. The best part? Most of these titles are significantly cheaper than the $60 you're probably used to paying for a shiny new game.… Read more

Will Nadella appointment weigh on debate over tech visas?

In his first e-mail to Microsoft employees in his newly-minted role as chief executive, Satya Nadella included a brief but important section titled, "Who am I?"

Over the last week especially, the world came to know a lot more about the executive, after the news was leaked that Nadella was the expected choice for the company's top job. But still, a dark horse he was, beating out splashier choices like former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and Ford CEO Alan Mulally. So we've still got a lot to learn about the new leader in Redmond.

His answer … Read more
