Three things I hope to see at HTC's March 25 event

HTC has planned a press event for March 25 at which we expect to see the company introduce its flagship smartphone for 2014 (the formal invitations just went out today). Though HTC has yet to spill any details about what we'll see that day -- all signs point to an "HTC One 2" -- I have a few suggestions as to what needs to happen before the company can hit a home run. Sure, some of these are little more ambitious than others, but that's all right. There's at least a month's worth of … Read more

Leaked specs paint fuller picture for HTC Desire 8

The HTC Desire 8 should provide a large, albeit mid-range, Android experience when it makes its debut.

According to a fresh set of leaked specs out of evleaks, the handset should include a 1.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.5GB RAM. The display size is tipped to be a bordering-on-phablet 5.5-inches with a 720p resolution that should put the image quality around 267 pixels per inch.

Additional specifications for the Desire 8 include 8GB internal storage with microSD expansion, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and 5-megapixel front-facing shooter.

Snakes invade casino? Ask the social-media lie detector

Remember when a shark swam through the streets of New Jersey during Hurricane Sandy? Actually, it didn't. But wouldn't it have been handy to have been able to check the veracity of those Garden State shark reports without going through the office of Gov. Chris Christie?

An international group of researchers funded by the EU is working on a lie detector for social media that could make it easier to separate online truth from lies and the lying liars who tell them (apologies to Al Franken).

Named Pheme after a Greek mythological figure who "pried into the affairs of mortals and gods, then repeated what she learned, starting off at first with just a dull whisper, but repeating it louder each time, until everyone knew," the system will collate a variety of data to assess in real time how likely it really is that a baby mermaid was just born in the Philippines or snakes invaded a Pennsylvania casino. … Read more

Multiple versions of Oppo Find 7 expected in March

Chinese handset maker Oppo is expected to introduce at least two versions of its Find 7 smartphone next month, according to recent rumblings. And a post on the company's Weibo social network account suggests that it's true.

Leaked benchmarks from earlier in the week suggest that at least one Oppo Find 7 will feature a 1080p display. Yet, since Oppo went on record to say that it would give the Find 7 a 2K display, this suggests that there could be multiple devices in the works -- an idea supported by the phrasing in Oppo's social networking … Read more

5.5-inch HTC Desire 8 leaks on eve of Mobile World Congress

HTC may soon introduce a new member of the Desire family, perhaps as soon as Mobile World Congress. A leaked image and basic hardware specifications have surfaced online, indicating that HTC is readying another sizable smartphone.

According to a "reliable" Engadget source, the Desire 8 is a midrange experience with a large, 5.5-inch display. Presumably powered by Android 4.4, the details could include a 13-megapixel rear camera, front-facing 5-megapixel shooter, dual speakers, and dual-SIM support. So far, that sounds fairly high end to us. The rumor also suggests a plastic body in multiple color options (like … Read more

Leaked HTC One 2 'Mini' promises a smaller, but still powerful phone

A list of purported hardware details for the upcoming HTC M8 Mini have found their way online, thanks to omnipresent source evleaks. Should the specifications prove accurate, though, the "Mini" experience won't exactly be small.

According to the tipster, the handset will run Android 4.4 KitKat with HTC's Sense 6 UI; both are expected in the flagship version of the handset as well. The Mini also should have a Snapdragon 400 processor with 1GB, 16GB internal storage, and microSD expansion. And like the M8 (or the HTC One 2, if you will), it may use … Read more

10 must-see videos of the week

As the Sochi Winter Olympics officially kick off this week, we're checking out some of the same technology Olympic organizers are relying on to generate snow at a resort in Lake Tahoe. These automated snowmaking systems (some of which can even be operated from a mobile phone) are making it easier and more efficient to make snow when Mother Nature doesn't want to cooperate.

Google Nexus 8 set for April launch, says report

Google's Nexus line might soon include a new tablet.

Google plans to launch an 8-inch tablet in April, dubbed the Nexus 8, to complement its current Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 offerings, Digitimes reported on Friday, citing people in the supply chain. Digitimes has a spotty record when it comes to accurate predictions, however, so its report should be taken with the proverbial grain of salt.

Still, this isn't the first time that we've heard rumblings of an 8-inch Nexus hitting store shelves at some point. According to Digitimes' sources, the move reflects Google's desire to … Read more

HTC in hunt for 'high end' Nexus tablet, report says

HTC will once again partner with Google to produce a Nexus device, or so suggests a new Taiwanese report.

According to unnamed sources close to the Commercial Times, HTC has won the rights to create a "high-end" Nexus tablet for release in the third quarter. Unfortunately, that's about the extent of this particular rumor. HTC, for its part, is remaining understandably tight-lipped on the subject.

As most readers know, HTC was the first company to manufacture a Nexus smartphone, the Nexus One. Introduced in 2010, it remains the only time Google and HTC would partner on a … Read more
