Yahoo: Miss Flickr during the outage? Try Tumblr!

Trying to make lemons out of lemonade during an eight-hour Flickr outage, Yahoo tried to rally its fans to engage on Twitter and Tumblr instead.

The photo-sharing site planned an outage from 9 p.m. PT Thursday to about 5 a.m. PT Friday, publishing its traditional "bad panda" outage notice. In the meantime, Yahoo fired up the WhileFlickrIsDown Tumblr and the #WhileFlickrIsDown hashtag on Twitter.

"Check out http://whileflickrisdown.tumblr.com/ and let us know what you are doing #WhileFlickrIsDown," Flickr tweeted, pointing to a form to submit entries for the Tumblr blog.

Americans hurt by server outages: We need to shop! We need to Facebook!

When all else fails, we always assume our favorite Web sites will be there.

We feel reassured that we'll have the comfort of sitting on our sofas, clutching our little iPads and communing with the same outside world that doesn't always like us in person.

Yet, for one reason or another, sites are going down. Sites are being attacked. Servers go down for reasons that don't always seem understandable.

Which means that Americans are beginning to realize that the fundaments of their lives are being assaulted and insulted.

Google, Microsoft outages: Two different outlooks?

It might be something to do with a complete inability to trust my fellow human, but I don't stick to any one provider of Web services.

I use three different browsers and three different e-mail services.

I have no adoration toward any of them, but if there's one thing that's hard not to admit, it's that most of Google's tend to work a little better than anyone else's.

Which made me wonder how last week might have proved that point.

Microsoft's Outlook e-mail has sometimes -- at least for me -- been more … Read more

Google outage reportedly caused big drop in global traffic

For a very brief few minutes on Friday you may have noticed some Google services, most notably search, appeared to be down. If not, maybe you noticed the ensuing freak-out across Twitter and the rest of the Internet.

At first glance the flash outage was little more than an opportunity for a few good one-liners and a chance to actually stand up from the keyboard and walk around for a few minutes. If we had connected nanobots floating around in our bloodstreams, certainly they would have registered a worldwide uptick in caffeine intake during those few moments. … Read more
