Ad leak hints T-Mobile will pay full family's early termination fees

T-Mobile, trying to snatch customers away from other US carriers, appears likely to announce an offer Wednesday to pay a whole family's early termination fees they'd otherwise have to pay themselves to cancel mobile phone contracts.

Droid Life spotted a T-Mobile ad on tech sites that promises: "We'll pay your family's termination fees when you trade in your devices." Such a move would counter AT&T's new offer to pay up to $450 to attract T-Mobile customers.

As part of its "UnCarrier" effort, T-Mobile already promised to "unshackle the family from those other guys"Read more

Three no-contract iPhone options compared

New year, new changes: Every now and again I'm going to skip my daily deal post in favor of something a little broader, something that merits discussion. It'll always be about saving money on tech, of course, just not a "buy this while it's on sale" product or service.

Today, for example, I want to talk iPhones. (Don't flee just yet, Android users -- this discussion is relevant to you as well.) Yeah, yeah, "a true cheapskate wouldn't have an iPhone," but the reality is I've always loved the product … Read more

FCC, wireless carriers reach cell phone unlocking deal

It appears the i's have been dotted and the t's have been crossed for a new policy that will now let consumers unlock their cell phones more easily.

The Federal Communications Commission has reached an agreement with the five major US wireless carriers that requires the carriers to disclose how and when cell phones on their networks can be unlocked, according to Reuters.

"CTIA and these companies share the goal of ensuring that America's wireless consumers continue to benefit from the world-leading range of competitive devices and offerings they currently enjoy, and believe that these voluntary … Read more

Review: Change your wireless carrier's icon with CarrierEditor for Mac

CarrierEditor for Mac lets users with iOS devices change the icon that's displayed for their wireless carrier. The app is easy to use, but unfortunately, it didn't work for us.

We're not ones to really fiddle around much with our iPhone 5's display, so we were a little nervous about trying CarrierEditor for Mac. It ended up being incredibly easy to use, with a wizard-style interface that walked us through each step of the process. We were first instructed to select a new icon to use in place of our phone's existing carrier logo. A … Read more

With Moto G phone, Google's mobile revolution now plausible

Google's inexpensive, new Android phones mean the company has a real chance at transforming the wireless industry -- something it attempted to do nearly four years ago with the Nexus One.

In October, the company released the Nexus 5, a top-end phone built by LG Electronics that has a remarkably low price of $349 for a 16GB model -- unlocked and with no contract. On Wednesday, Google announced the Moto G, which costs $179 for an 8GB model, also unlocked and off contract. … Read more

America's first next-gen aircraft carrier takes high tech to sea

The world's most-advanced aircraft carrier should be meeting a bottle of champagne today. Head on.

The USS Gerald R. Ford will be christened during a ceremony in Newport News, Va., an event that will usher in the next generation of aircraft carriers. The Gerald R. Ford is the first of its class -- the Ford class. And over the last few years, the shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding have been putting together a vessel that is intended to move the aircraft carrier technology needle forward significantly.

I had a chance to visit the shipyard during Road Trip 2010, and … Read more

YTL CEO Wing Lee bets on 4G in Malaysia (Q&A)

AMSTERDAM -- How does a national-scale carrier go from nonexistent to profitable in five years?

There's probably no single, simple path. But in the case of YTL Communications in Malaysia, the answer combines aggressive construction of a 4G network, a government boost for new network operators, and a business that embraces the services that many carriers don't like.

That's according to Chief Executive Wing Lee, who sat down to talk with CNET News' Stephen Shankland during a visit to Europe. Lee, who previously worked for 15 years at Sprint and Clearwire, was named CEO of YTL CommunicationsRead more

Spotify to carriers: We don't need to be enemies

AMSTERDAM -- Spotify is one of the most prominent "over the top" services that tax the mobile data networks of wireless carriers, but the music-streaming service should be seen as an ally, not an enemy, in the view of the company's telco partnership leader.

Michael Abbatista argued here that a Spotify partnership actually helps carriers by reducing subscriber churn -- the tendency for customers to hop from one carrier to another. And particularly with younger customers, it can make the carrier look better.

"We bring a certain brand uplift," Abbatista said at the Broadband World … Read more
