iOS 7.1 jailbroken but only on the iPhone 4

An enterprising hacker has jailbroken iOS 7.1, at least as seen on a YouTube video.

Posted by self-dubbed "insane programmer" winocm, the silent video shows a jailbroken iPhone 4 powering up in untethered mode. Winocm takes the phone from screen to screen and makes sure to hit the Settings screen to show that the phone is indeed running iOS 7.1.

So does this mean all iOS users running 7.1 can now jailbreak their devices? Apparently not.

A comment to the video from an account called "All things jailbreak" says the jailbreak works only … Read more

Which iPad should you buy?

Want to buy an iPad? Not every one does -- or should (see our Android picks for alternatives) -- but as of this moment, Apple is selling four distinct versions of its tablet. Now that the fourth-gen Retina iPad has replaced the iPad 2 in the roster, which of Apple's tablets is the right one? Which is the best value? What should you do?

Let's take a look at each: there are two iPad Minis, and two larger 9.7-inch iPads. The good news is this is a better selection of iPads than before. But, I also think … Read more

Christian Bale is top choice to play Steve Jobs, says report

Move over, Aston Kutcher, there may soon be a new Steve Jobs in town. An as-yet-untitled movie for Sony Pictures centering around the Apple co-founder has a script by Aaron Sorkin ("The Social Network"), but it doesn't yet have a star attached. Director David Fincher ("Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") is said to be the likeliest person to helm the production. According to a report from TheWrap, Fincher said he would only do the film if Christian Bale signs on as the lead.

The source is a classic unnamed "individual familiar with the project." Whether that person is a Sony exec or a coffee fetcher, we don't know. Fincher and Sorkin teamed up previously for "The Social Network," a geek-flavored film about the rise of Facebook. It would seem natural to turn them loose together on the Steve Jobs story.… Read more

Most China Mobile 4G users bought iPhone, chairman says

This might be a good year for Apple in China.

China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua on Thursday said that "most" of his company's 1.3 million 4G customers have bought the iPhone -- an important success rate for Apple, considering the carrier only started selling the company's handset in January. And despite that figure appearing to be small, China Mobile reported that it expects its total number of 4G subscribers to jump to 50 million by year's end. If Apple can keep its lead, that could mean a boatload of iPhone sales in China.

Samsung: iPad's bad, Surface is a joke, and Kindle's a swindle

For too long, tech manufacturers have mocked just one competitor at a time.

It allows for a little focus, but it becomes very monotonous.

Yes, Microsoft thinks the iPad's awful, Samsung thinks the iPhone's awful, and Amazon is sure the iPad's awful.

Someone at Samsung must have leaped out of bed recently and screamed: "I know! Why don't we say everyone else is awful?"

Here are the fruits of this thought. A new ad for the Samsung Galaxy Pro series of products proves beyond a reasonable doubt that everything else is garbage, trash, and … Read more
