Apple rumor claims all-new, 12-inch MacBook Air

Apple is planning a radical redesign of the MacBook "soon," if a forum post out of China is to be believed.

A key aspect of the redesign would be the elimination of the fan assembly, according to MacRumors, which describes the post as coming from a reliable leaker of future Apple hardware.

A fanless design almost always implies ultrathin and -light. For example, the iPad Air is a fanless design as are Android and most Windows tablets. Even some of the newest, thinnest Windows 2-in-1s are fanless, such as the Intel Haswell processor-based HP Spectre 13 tablet that … Read more

Apple considering a Spotify rival and iTunes Android app

Apple is in negotiations with senior executives at record labels about launching an on-demand streaming music service that would compete with Spotify and Beats music, according to a report by Billboard. Citing three unnamed sources, the publication said the "exploratory talks" are right now in very early stages.

The report also said Apple is mulling creating an iTunes Store app for Android, bringing the property to enemy turf. Apple did not return a request for comment. We'll update this post if we hear back.

The considerations come at a trying time for iTunes. According to Nielsen, downloads … Read more

iOS 7.1 jailbroken but only on the iPhone 4

An enterprising hacker has jailbroken iOS 7.1, at least as seen on a YouTube video.

Posted by self-dubbed "insane programmer" winocm, the silent video shows a jailbroken iPhone 4 powering up in untethered mode. Winocm takes the phone from screen to screen and makes sure to hit the Settings screen to show that the phone is indeed running iOS 7.1.

So does this mean all iOS users running 7.1 can now jailbreak their devices? Apparently not.

A comment to the video from an account called "All things jailbreak" says the jailbreak works only … Read more

Which iPad should you buy?

Want to buy an iPad? Not every one does -- or should (see our Android picks for alternatives) -- but as of this moment, Apple is selling four distinct versions of its tablet. Now that the fourth-gen Retina iPad has replaced the iPad 2 in the roster, which of Apple's tablets is the right one? Which is the best value? What should you do?

Let's take a look at each: there are two iPad Minis, and two larger 9.7-inch iPads. The good news is this is a better selection of iPads than before. But, I also think … Read more

Christian Bale is top choice to play Steve Jobs, says report

Move over, Aston Kutcher, there may soon be a new Steve Jobs in town. An as-yet-untitled movie for Sony Pictures centering around the Apple co-founder has a script by Aaron Sorkin ("The Social Network"), but it doesn't yet have a star attached. Director David Fincher ("Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") is said to be the likeliest person to helm the production. According to a report from TheWrap, Fincher said he would only do the film if Christian Bale signs on as the lead.

The source is a classic unnamed "individual familiar with the project." Whether that person is a Sony exec or a coffee fetcher, we don't know. Fincher and Sorkin teamed up previously for "The Social Network," a geek-flavored film about the rise of Facebook. It would seem natural to turn them loose together on the Steve Jobs story.… Read more

Apple envisions stylus with extendable, multitouch nib

Apple wants to cook up a more powerful yet sensitive stylus for your tablet.

Published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office, a patent filing dubbed simply "Input Device Having Extendable Nib" sees the nib of the stylus as the key to its power. The nib would be able to extend, thereby offering different capabilities based on its length.

At its smallest length, the nib would have a limited number of areas through which it could interact with a tablet. But extending the nib would increase the number of multitouch points, giving it the ability to create … Read more
