130 mpg VW Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid hot hatch

GENEVA -- Following in the footsteps of the turbocharged VW GTI and the turbodiesel VW GTD is the newly announced plug-in hybrid Volkswagen GTE. Like its Golf GT siblings, this high-performance hatchback makes about 200 horsepower but distinguishes itself with a claim of up to 130 mpg.

Under the GTE's familiar hood are two powerplants working in tandem. The first is a 1.4-liter TSI engine that generates 148 horsepower by combusting turbocharged, force-fed air with direct-injected gasoline. On the other side of the engine bay are the bright orange cables that feed electricity to a 101-horsepower electric motor … Read more

2015 Lamborghini Huracan debuts with Nvidia-powered digital dashboard

GENEVA -- The December announcement of Lamborghini's replacement for the Gallardo was a nice early Christmas present for this fan of bullish supercars. Today at the 2014 Geneva auto show, we finally met the 2015 Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 in the flesh.

Supercar, super specs Lamborghini gave us the full scoop on the Huracán's specs when it was announced earlier, but here's a quick refresher. It'll hit 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds, goes on to 124 mph (200 kph) in 9.9 seconds, and keeps going to a 201 mph … Read more

Cadillac ELR an extraordinary car at an extraordinary price

Call it a plug-in series hybrid or extended range electric vehicle, the 2014 Cadillac ELR, using the same drivetrain architecture as the Chevrolet Volt, attempts to help the quintessential American luxury automaker push the boundaries of advanced, economical mobility. This type of post-oil development has been taken up by other companies, such as BWM with its 'i' brand, but the show has really been stolen by the Tesla Model S.

To Cadillac's credit, the ELR shows excellent exterior design, employs solid cabin electronics, goes about 37 miles without using a drop of gasoline before its engine has to kick … Read more

Mercedes-Benz S550 Coupe advances technology with built-in banking, Apple CarPlay

GENEVA -- Mercedes-Benz model names look like alphabet soup with their one-, two-, and three-letter combinations, but things are about to get a little simpler as the CL-class goes away. In its place will be the S-class Coupe, a new two-door version of the S-class sedan.

Mercedes-Benz released a new generation of its S-class sedan last year, which showed enough technological innovation to win CNET's Tech Car of the Year award. This new coupe will offer all the technology, luxury, and power of the S-class sedan, but with a sleek two-door body.

The S-class Coupe, which will be sold … Read more

2015 Jeep Renegade goes rogue ahead of Geneva debut

The first photos of the new, small Jeep model have started to leak to the Web ahead of the 2014 Geneva auto show courtesy of the folks over on Jalopnik.

Dubbed the 2015 Jeep Renegade (a much better name than the rumored "Jeepster"), the crossover will likely be based on the Fiat-Chrysler group Small Wide platform architecture that underpins the Fiat 500L and will be sized to compete with other small crossovers such as the Nissan Juke and Rogue and the Kia Soul. Most Renegades will likely be front-drivers, destined for on-road and soft-road duty, but don't … Read more

Supercars and stylish concepts slated for Geneva auto show

With a few years of troubles in the European automotive sector and not much preview news, I hadn't been expecting much for the 2014 Geneva auto show. But the last month proved me wrong, wrong, wrong. Almost every major automaker, and many you've probably never heard of, has something big planned for the show, from blisteringly fast supercars, to design concepts, to the kinds of new models that matter for the everyday driver.

Last December, Lamborghini released news of its Gallardo replacement, the Huracan. Not only sporting a 610-horsepower V-10 engine, the Huracan brings in high-tech features such … Read more

High-trim Chevrolet Silverado is truly a 'Cowboy Cadillac'

The High Country is one of the highest trim levels available on the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Sitting parallel with the more sporty Z71, the more luxurious High Country is, in the words of CNET's parking attendant, sort of a Cowboy Cadillac.

The Cowboy Cadillac Outside, the High Country features a unique chrome grille, a body-color matched front bumper and 20-inch chrome wheels. The headlamps are upgraded to halogen projectors, and foglights are standard. Out back, the bed has been upgraded with corner steps, hidden black tie downs, and an EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate that opens slowly (rather than … Read more

Lexus GS 450h excellent on fuel economy, short on emotion

Buyers considering a BMW 5-series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, or even a Tesla Model S would do well to look at the 2014 Lexus GS 450h. The BMW has its handling, the Mercedes-Benz nearly drives itself, and the Tesla is the best electric car on the market. Against all that, the GS 450h has a no-nonsense character.

The GS 450h is a luxury car for the driver who doesn't want to spend a lot of time thinking about his car.

The unobtrusive exterior design supports this mission. Although Lexus added some unique styling cues in the car's last update, such … Read more

Nissan Juke update for Geneva looks to have lost no flair

Nissan released a teaser image of the 2015 model year update to the Juke today, ahead of the full unveil next week in Geneva. The Juke is one of Nissan's most technically advanced cars, and employs love-it-or-hate-it styling that makes it a bit cultish.

The Juke originally launched as a 2010 model, so this update puts it on a five-year product cycle.

The image released today uses a lot of graphic obfuscation to hide many of the details. The car is clearly still a four-door with a hatchback, retaining its compact SUV style. The wheel arches look slightly enhanced, … Read more

The 2015 Ford Focus breaks cover at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

Ford has just chosen a curious place to unveil the next iteration of one of its most popular cars around the world: Mobile World Congress. The place is usually a hive of smartphones and tablets and related industry stuff, and so not where you'd expect to see a major car launch. But then, Ford did choose to unveil the Focus Electric at CES a few years back, so there is precedent.

What's new? Well, the exterior to start, though the changes are subtle for this refresh. We've been shown the five-door hatchback, which if anything is a … Read more
