Moto G coming to Republic Wireless

Republic Wireless made waves late last year with its $299 Moto X smartphone and dirt-cheap no-contract service plans. Now the company plans to lower the cost of entry with a less expensive handset.

Starting in April, Republic will offer the Motorola Moto G (8GB) for $149 and Moto G (16GB) for $179. These replace the company's previous entry-level phone, the decidedly outdated Defy XT.

Motorola first unveiled the Moto G in December, offering it as an affordable alternative to the popular Moto X. With a starting price of $179, the unlocked phone was initially available in US and global … Read more

LG's upcoming G3 could have a 2K display

Slowly but surely, pieces of the LG G3 puzzle seem to be falling into place. Rumors point to a May debut for the device, which means that the pace of rumors should quicken over the next few weeks.

A user agent profile spotted on LG's Web site by frequent Twitter tipster @evleaks suggests that the handset-maker has a D850 model in the works. Considering that the LG D800 is the model number for the current G2 flagship, it's logical that the D850 here would be its eventual successor.

The XML document also reveals the screen display. Listed at … Read more

Huawei: We like Windows Phone but Android is higher priority

Huawei is still on friendly terms with Windows Phone, but Android is the true object of its affection.

Speaking with blog site TrustedReviews, Huawei Chief Marketing Officer Shao Yang said the maker of mobile devices remains "committed" to making phones outfitted with Microsoft's mobile OS. Last year, China-based Huawei launched the Ascend W1 and struck a deal with Microsoft to sell Windows Phone devices in Africa.

But that commitment isn't quite a top priority.

"Compared with Android, the priority of Windows Phone is much lower but is still one of our choices of OS," … Read more

WhatsApp pooh-poohs report of security flaw

The people behind WhatsApp are rebutting a report contending that the app is vulnerable because your chats can be stored on an Android phone's SD card.

Earlier this week, DoubleThink chief technology officer Bas Bosschert posted a blog alleging that hackers could use a malicious app to tap into your WhatsApp conversations by uploading the database from the SD card to a Web site. To prove his point, Bosschert said he created an app that was able to snag and read the database files.

In response, a spokesperson for WhatsApp called the report "overstated" and issued the … Read more

Smartphone shoppers in India are the first ones able to purchase the new Nokia X handset.

Offered as of Monday at a price of 8,599 rupees ($141), the new Android-based smartphone targets the midrange market, according to the Economic Times. That range typically sees phones sell for between 7,000 and 15,000 rupees, and encompasses the best-selling mobile phones in India.

LG G3 could be dustproof and water resistant, report indicates

LG's successor to the G2 could be both water resistant and dust-proof, according to Korea's ETNews.

Presumably, the handset will be known as the G3 and will make its debut in the second half of the year. Hardware specifications are a bit muddy at this point, but the rumor is already churning. Early chatter suggests a Quad HD (1,440x2,560 pixels) display, a 64-bit processor, and a 16-megapixel rear camera may be in order for the smartphone.

Looking ahead, I'd anticipate more handset manufacturers to adopt water resistance and dust proof capabilities. Sony, for example, has … Read more

The one real problem with Republic Wireless

Republic Wireless has attracted a lot of attention in recent months by offering one of the most attractive smartphone deals ever: a $299 Motorola Moto X and no-contract service for as little as $5 monthly.

I've been using the phone and service for over a month now, and just a couple weeks ago I professed that despite a few little quirks, I had no qualms about recommending both.

I now have a qualm.

Republic doesn't currently support short codes, which is something you've probably never heard of and therefore don't consider a big deal. That was … Read more
