Microsoft takes on the 'free' OS

Microsoft is taking baby steps toward offering its operating system for free or on the cheap -- a necessary tactic in a world dominated by Google's Android and other up-and-coming free operating systems, an analyst tells CNET.

As reported by the Times of India this week, Microsoft had been in negotiations with Indian phone companies to "produce affordable Windows Phone devices" since last year.

The agreement was "clinched" when Microsoft agreed to offer the Windows Phone OS sans the usual licensing fee, according to the Times. Microsoft said to CNET in a statement that it &… Read more

Dish blinks in Hopper standoff with Disney -- or is it a wink?

Dish's protections around its contentious Auto-Hop feature on the Hopper remote DVR just started to crack.

In order to renew an agreement that will ensure Dish continues to carry Disney networks like ABC and ESPN and gain access to video on apps for the channels, the satellite television distributor agreed to disable the automatic ad-skipping feature on its Hopper network DVR for three days after a program is broadcast.

The deal was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

However, a release detailing the deal later Monday showed their deal goes much further than that. Dish also secured the … Read more

Tizen chairman, ever the optimist, says smartphone will hit market in 2014

BARCELONA, Spain -- Tizen Association Chairman Ryoichi Roy Sugimara is very protective of his "baby."

That baby, of course, is the upstart operating system Tizen and, by extension, any device running on the platform.

In explaining the continued delay of a smartphone running on Tizen, Sugimara said the association and its carrier partners are carefully looking at the best market for a launch. Sugimara told CNET that a phone will indeed hit the market some time this year, although he declined to get more specific.

"You'll see a real commercial launch in some markets," he … Read more

Dish's Hopper legal win against Fox stands -- again

A federal appeals court Friday denied broadcaster 21st Century Fox's appeal to make Dish Network's Hopper ad-skipping service temporarily unavailable to consumers.

At the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth District, a panel of the court denied Fox's request for an "en banc" rehearing, which means the entire bench of the Ninth Circuit court would rehear the case rather than the smaller panel. It also rejected another panel rehearing.

According to the opinion, the judges involved voted against the rehearing because the lower Los Angeles court's decision appropriately determined Fox failed to … Read more

Networks are gearing up for Super Bowl 2014, and this year online viewers are getting a little something extra: NFL playoff coverage.

NBC is re-upping on what it offered customers last year by streaming its two wild card match-ups scheduled for Saturday and the NFL Pro Bowl on January 24. CBS is offering pre-Super Bowl streaming for the first time this year, which means it will be showing all four of its playoff games. This means fans will be … Read more

Here's Megan Fox showing her Call of Duty during a 'Hangover'

When it was announced last week that Megan Fox would be in the new Call Of Duty: Ghosts ad, many reacted with a shudder of disbelief.

This would be the first time that a woman would star in a Call Of Duty ad. Could she possibly act better than Kobe Bryant?

I can put you at your ease. The ad has been released and I see no reason, after this, that the Lakers wouldn't sign Fox to play shooting guard.

In this bracing homage to "The Hangover," we see four boys going off to Vegas to do … Read more
