Steve Jobs reportedly thought TVs a 'terrible business'

Never mind those years of persistent rumors and speculation: Steve Jobs was reportedly not in favor of Apple producing a television set.

Rumors that Apple had an Internet-connected TV set in the works have floated around since 2009, including one analyst predicting that Apple would produce a TV set by the end of 2012 or early 2013. However, during a 2010 meeting just months before Jobs' resignation as CEO, the Apple co-founder told key staff members that he didn't think Apple would ever release a television set because of the poor margins and upgrade history, according to a new … Read more

Tim Cook: Apple TV did over $1B in 2013 revenue

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- While the iPhone and iPad have come to dominate Apple's business, the television has often been relegated to an afterthought for the company. So much for Apple TV being just a hobby, said Chief Executive Tim Cook.

"That hobby was over a billion dollars of revenue last year," Cook said during the company's annual meeting with shareholders here. "It's a little hard to call it a hobby anymore."

The billion-dollar figure includes content sales conducted by Apple on the platform -- like movies and TV shows -- and not just … Read more

An Apple watch? The hints have been out there

Apple has strongly hinted that it will enter new product categories in 2014. And it's about time -- not in the sense that it's been too long, but in the sense that the timing follows a pattern of a major new product category every few years.

Two of the most oft-speculated devices for the Apple queue are a television and a watch (known by its rumor-mill shorthand as the "iWatch").

The company's recent video service moves beyond offering just Netflix and iTunes -- the addition of many streaming services on Apple TV such as Qello, … Read more
