Public test next week for Vista SP1

Microsoft on Tuesday said that it has reached the "release candidate" with the first service pack for Windows Vista, with plans to make the test software available publicly next week.

It is releasing the test code this week to the 15,000 or so people who have been beta testing SP1 already, and will also make it available on Thursday to those in the MSDN and TechNet developer programs.

"We feel really good and we look forward to receiving feedback from our larger set of testers," said David Zipkin, a senior product manager on the Windows … Read more

Microsoft Live Labs releases Volta Web toolkit

Microsoft's Live Labs, a standalone product research group, released on Wednesday Volta (download it from CNET Download.com), a development tool designed to make it easier to partition an application's component pieces across a network.

The problem that Microsoft researchers are trying to address is the difficulty of deciding which part of the application runs under which tier--either the client or server.

Typically, developers need to write code to handle the communication between those tiers. And they need to decide during development on how to best architect their applications for optimal performance.

With Volta, developers can make "… Read more

What you want on your mobile phone

Fierce Wireless recently reported that music downloads to cell phones will make up 30 percent of the industry's revenue by 2011, more than doubling today's estimated 13 percent till. That suggests mobile music downloads will grow far more popular than they already are.

This begs the question: Just how important is mobile music to cell phone users? Important enough if iPods, iPhones, and phones are sold primarily for their players. More pointedly, how important are cell phone music downloads to you? Are they more wanted than videos or games, or just as popular? What's your preferred technique … Read more

Simplify Media--a free desktop application for Windows or Mac OS X that lets you stream your digital music or your friends' from iTunes or Winamp (Simplify Media covered previously)--today released a new version of its software that is developed to run on the Apple iPhone or iPod Touch.

Rather than function as a conventional iPhone app, (i.e. a Web app built for Safari), the new program is standalone software that requires a "jailbroken" iPhone to work.

The ability to listen to your entire music collection or your friends' anywhere your iPhone or iPod Touch has … Read more

Grisoft acquires Exploit Prevention Labs

Grisoft, maker of AVG antivirus and Internet security software, on Wednesday announced the acquisition of Exploit Prevention Labs, maker of the LinkScanner family of safe Web-browsing applications.

Unlike other safe-surfing applications, which tend to rely on databases, LinkScanner uses technology that determines, as the page is downloaded onto your browser, whether it is tainted with malicious software.

In CNET Reviews testing, LinkScanner has detected recent changes on Web pages where other safe surfing applications, such as McAfee SiteAdvisor, has not. One limitation of LinkScanner is its inability to determine whether a page is fraudulent; LinkScanner determines only whether the page … Read more

Killer Download: Replacing Windows Explorer

Navigating your hard drive using Windows Explorer is pretty straightforward. Double-clicking a directory like My Documents brings up a list of items you have in that folder. You're given a couple of options for how you view the contents of a folder, such as arranging by date or by name. You also can view your documents using icons or tiles. The Windows Explorer window shares some of the features of Internet Explorer as well, like Favorites and toolbars. Clearly, this is nothing new to anyone who has used a Windows machine, and like many of you, I have my own ideas of how it could be made better.

We can probably agree that the options available with Explorer are adequate for navigating your hard drive, but a little more information and flexibility would go a long way. I found a few programs that add much more to file navigation, such as tabbed and paned directories for drag-and-drop file transfers and document previews so you know what you're opening before you open it. These Windows Explorer replacements offer tons of information about your files at a glance, like expanded properties and sorting capabilities not available with the default Windows setup. Some also feature much more intuitive methods for moving files around.… Read more

Grab screenshots from videos and DVDs

The response to my post last week about how to convert digital photo collections to DVD slide shows was a resounding, "Whatever. How can I grab a screenshot from a video or DVD?"

Who knew that the number of would-be "screencappers" was so legion? Regardless, I'm your humble servant, and your wish is generally my command.

First off, for image screen captures of digital video files, I highly recommend VLC Media Player. I know I mention the free media player quite a bit, but it's still the cream of the freeware video crop for me due to its light footprint and flexibility.… Read more
