"Works well and it is free"

    February 13, 2013  |   By PSSnyder

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

FREE is the number one Pro. I have used WinZip for years but I do not think it is reasonable to require users to buy a new version every three or four years. I use ZIP compression because it is good enough, with WinZip and other paid products I keep buying the same function over and over. 7-Zip may not be as elegant, but it works.

    Cons

7-Zip is a bit harder to use and lacks some modern features and compression methods.

    Summary

If you need a good file compression tool and do not have to open files that 7-Zip does not support - then you should try the Free utility first and only buy one of the competitors if 7-Zip does not do what you need done.

    "Excellent program and spyware free!"

    February 6, 2013  |   By poppameth

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

Great program. It opens all major archives and creates it own highly compressed archives. Installation and usage are simple to grasp.

    Cons

    None to speak of.

    Summary

About Spyware/Malware. There is none. People are complaining about this program being infected. It is NOT! There is a bogus website out there trying to pass off infected programming as 7-zip. It is not the official website nor the real 7-zip program. Don't blame an excellent program when you download from an unofficial source. The real 7-zip site is www.7-zip.org

    "Has spyware!"

    January 28, 2013  |   By inaun

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

Does not hide the fact that it is bundles with nasty spyware -- just read terms of service before you accept them.

    Cons

Changes your web-searches and re-directs you based on advertisement words.

    Summary

Get something else -- don't support spyware!

"nasty pop-up boxes in Firefox and Chrome"

    January 11, 2013  |   By ubat

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

Worked OK (used only occasionally) in its proposed function

    Cons

Two months after I installed it, nasty pop-ups began to appear in both Firefox and Chrome -- all kinds of ads and even a computer scan to accelerate Windows. I checked configs in both browsers (both were set to kill pop-ups), freaked out, ran a system scan with Norton. Nothing helped, and I couldn't figure out where these pop-ups were coming from. I finally decided to check my installed programs, and chose to uninstall 7-Zip. All pop-ups ceased immediately.

    Summary

If you can live with all kinds of pop-ups in your browsers...

    "Uninstall messes up registry."

    January 8, 2013  |   By emjotj

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

    Fast and confusing

    Cons

Wrong install registry using, uninstall deletes whole tree, not one key making system inoperable. Aggressive addition of unwanted products.

    Summary

I wander that nobody noticed that: it uses wrong keys to register at tree level, not key. When uninstalling this application the whole tree "App Path" is deleted because of this making system useless. I confirm this behavior on clean "Sand Box" XP machine. Than I looked how it registers itself in registry. It does registration in a very wrong way. This product is dangerous to your system. It also installs additional Add-Ons even if you answer "NO" to the question "Do you want this Add-On".
