    "Installs browser hijack"

    December 31, 2013  |   By DESiegel60

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

None, because I uninstalled it at once.

    Cons

Installs a browser hijack. Presents this as an option, and when the option is deselected installs it anyway, on all browsers in the computer. Removing it requires resetting browsers to their defaults after uninstalling the hijack program, thus losing desired add-ins and plug-ins. Cnet should refuse to carry such malware.

    Summary

Don't download this until the hijack is certified removed.

    "Fair to middling zip ware"

    November 12, 2013  |   By batsdude

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

    None to really speak of

    Cons

Certainly not for beginners, as the "help" doesn't really help much. Overly complicated control. Earlier zip ware was much easier to use. Should have the option to not prioritize itself as the only zipware. Creating self extracting packages could certainly be much simpler.

    Summary

All in all, it's overly complicated, not too helpful, overly proprietary average stuff, that could use a little automation, and more user control settings. Really NOT for beginners.

    "Does everything you need"

    October 22, 2013  |   By BrerBunny

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

Has all the required features, you can compress and extract files and is presented in a no-nonsense basic gui which is kind on memory.
Contrary to some of the claims in the reviews here, you CAN create an archive. You simply click on the files you wish to add to your archive and then click "Add". It then gives you a dialogue in which you create your archive.

    Cons

This program assumes you have some knowledge of computers, but is that a bad thing?

    Summary

Excellent product, simple, no nonsense and kind on memory

"The concern about new archives is a misunderstanding."

    September 17, 2013  |   By Cantiloper

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

Works at least somewhat better than Zip.

    Cons

They *should* have had a menu item specifically saying "create an archive" to avoid the confusion presented by just offering "add to archive."

    Summary

I think the poster concerned that he could not create new archives but must add to an existing archive misunderstands how the program works. It asks you if you want to "add to" an archive with your basic file name (the file you are compressing) with the extension .7z

It then creates that file, slightly more compact than zip Ultra ppmd, in about the same timeframe. (haven't done that full comparison for video files alone, but did it for a 2 gig directory with several thousand small mixed file types and a hundred or so subdirectories included.)

"Simply the best archive tool for Windows"

    September 13, 2013  |   By tallmabey

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

7-Zip is simply the most feature-rich, easy to use archive tool there is for Windows. That, combined with the price of Free, makes it the obvious choice for making, extracting, or changing archives.

Of particular note is 7-Zip's compatibility with a large number of archive formats, which other tools don't give you for free. Also, the ability to split a large archive in to smaller chunks is very useful if you have to email them, so that each attachment complies with the size limit of your email client.

The user who claimed that you can't create new archives is completely mistaken. I've been using 7-Zip for several years and have had no problem making hundreds of archives during that time. (At least it feels like hundreds.) You do have to use the left mouse button instead of going to the File menu, but I personally don't find that difficult or user unfriendly.

    Cons

Not eye candy, but I'll take function over form any day.

"7-Zip did not work for me."

    September 9, 2013  |   By AnthonyStarfield

    Version: 7-Zip 9.22 beta

    Pros

    Nothing at all.

    Cons

This program is not user friendly. When I clicked Add - An error message popped up with that annoying Windows, it's an error sound that read - You must select one or more files.

I tried - File, Open, but there was no Windows Explorer window so I could actually select a file.

I tried to drag and drop a file onto 7-Zip. A window popped up that read - Add to archive. I clicked okay. The file is a collection of MP3 files for learning French. The RAR version is 204,159 kilobytes long. 7-Zip converted it to a 7z file that is 206,531 kilobytes long. Nothing that I tried with 7-zip actually worked.

This is one of those programs that makes sense only to the guy who wrote it.

I finally did get my file extracted with a program called The Extractor. It worked fine. The only minor snag was finding the method to start the program! There's a small button on the lower right that reads - Go! I looked at everything else before I found it.

My computer is a Fujitsu T4220 tablet running Windows XP.

    Summary

I studied computer programming. I have an associate's degree and a bachelor's degree in computer science. On the very first day of class, Professor Patello told us, "The most important thing to remember is to make your programs user friendly!"

This 7-zip program is not user friendly, and it did not work at all for me. The Extractor did work, it just took a little hunting to find the Go button. You could also try Win Rar. I've used that before and it always worked well.
