Auslogics Disk Defrag

Version: 1.4.15.306

Very fast. And free!

Pros: This program has an easy-to-understand user window. Just one click starts the Defragmenting process. Then it shows you a color "map" of your hard drive so you can watch the progress of Defragmentation if you want to see it. I forgot to Defrag for several weeks so my hard drive was pretty messy. AusLogics Defragger was fast and so efficient that it was done long before Windows' regular Defrag program would have finished, based on my previous expereience over several years. So, overall, this free product gets high marks.

Cons: Defragmenting should really be done AFTER you run Disc Cleanup in Windows to get rid of all the junky leftover stuff like Temporary Internet Files, Windows Temp files, Recycle Bin, etc. Also, you should run a hard drive Error Check before Defragmenting. Most of us are trained from long practice to do this maintenance just before we start Windows Defragmenter. But, Auslogics does not include those features so you still need to REMEMBER to use the Windows DiscCleanup and Error Checking before you run this fast new Defragger! By the way, it's the Disc Cleanup thing that frees up space on your hard drive, not Defragmanting the drive.

Windows Movie Maker (Windows XP)

Version: 2.0

Excellent free software with easy to use features.

Pros: Tried it on a 1.6GHz computer and also on a 2.53GHz computer, both using Windows XP Home Edition. It worked well on both machines. The program was stable with no freezes or crashes, but it does take some time to import large video files (several hundred MegaBytes' worth), and more time when you click to complete or Save the finished video. Just go for coffee or tea and give it a few minutes. We recorded a general Christmas greeting then added a personal hello to each person along with Titles, snowflakes, sleighbell sounds and end credits. Even though we were complete beginners we managed to get it all done without too much effort. You can save the finished movie to your computer, or burn it onto a blank CD, or tell MovieMaker to shrink the file size for emailing.

Cons: MovieMaker in Windows XP won't burn anything onto DVD. However, our DVD burner came with its own software which conveniently burns your saved video movie onto a blank DVD.

Also, the finished video is limited to Windows Media Video format (.wmv), but almost every computer can play it, so no real problem there.

GetDataBack Data Recovery

Version: 3.3

This program rocks!

Pros: After a power outage our second hard drive which we use for data storage was no longer recognized by Windows - no files, no folders, no pictures, no music, nothing. Since I was out of town, my wife decided to re-format the drive to see if it could still be used. Then she copied some of our photos off of a CD onto the drive to prove it would work and left the rest up to me when I got home. Having little hope, I started GetDataBack and went to bed while it began scanning our 160GB drive. Next morning it showed a huge list of recoverable files. I told it to recover them (to our main Windows C: drive in My Documents). Later we went through the recovered files. As far as we could tell everything was there except for two photos - yes, just two! - and one garbled music track. In additon, it recovered some photos and documents we had deleted over six months before. We were suitably impressed .....

Cons: It may take hours and hours to scan a large drive.

SpywareBlaster

Version: 3.5.1

Used with companion program SpywareGuard it's a great combo!

Pros: We used to run AdAware twice a week and it often found dozens of "critical" spyware objects to remove. So, we installed SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (blocks browser hijack and drive-by downloads), both of which are free. Now, when we run run AdAware (plus the free online Ewido spyware remover) they find almost nothing to remove. Clearly, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are very effective.

Cons: You must manually click to Check for Updates. They do offer an auto-updater but that costs money.
