SolSuite Solitaire 2007

Version: 7.11

Overall Excellent Game With A Couple Shortcomings

Pros: SolSuite 2007 has possibly the best card graphics of any current solitaire game including extra large high-res card sizes (the only way to go with large, high res monitors) and an outstanding selection of high quality card sets and card backs (recently improved again in v7.11). There's also lots of backgrounds to chose from. Detailed game win/loss statics complete with graphs is also impressive. Of course, the huge selection of games and game variations is SolSuite's strong suit if you'll pardon the pun.

Cons: On the down side, sound lags behind the rest of the game and is obviously a low priority for the developers. SolSuite sounds are long overdue for an update. This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that you can't even select your own sounds for events! Default sounds can only be enabled or disabled. One kludgey workaround is to overwrite files SolSuite uses with sounds you prefer. Forget about something as "advanced" as sound themes or background music - even though sound is at least as important as backgrounds or skins.

A more minor disappointment is the Game-Won/High Scores dialog which looks and sounds like it was developed in Windows 95--including the original Win95 tada.wav sound. You've got to be kidding! And what are all those fake player names and scores doing in the list??

SolSuite Solitaire 2008

Version: 8.7

World-Class In Some Areas, Surprisingly Mediocre In Others

Pros: Enormous selection of solitaire games (more than you may ever find time to play). Best-of-breed collection of beautifully rendered card sets and backs, each with 7 size adjustments to delight the eyes at every screen resolution. Generous selection of attractive backgrounds. Excellent game support with rules help, legal moves display and even demos. Card counter. Extensive game statistics. Multi-player mode. Nice looking selection of avatars which, although very limited, can be expanded by adding your own. I'd rate Solitaire 2008 a 5+ based on these features. So why only 3 stars? Read on...

Cons: Sounds take you back to the Win95 days---literally and figuratively. Win a game and hear the lame Win95 "tada.wav". To make matters worse, there's no way to customize sounds other than to enable or disable them (sounds appear to be hard-coded in the executable). Games don't automatically pause when SolSuite window loses focus. Accessing any menu or toolbar--for example to change card size or check the rules--automatically unpauses a paused game. Instead of notifying "no more moves" when a game is over, Solitaire 2008 just sits there waiting for you to figure it out. Tip: hitting 'M' at this point will display "No more moves", so it would be nice and obviously easy for SolSuite to do this automatically. A few less important annoyances: Win95-era winning animations and pointless list of fake names/scores in the high scores dialog. Most of these cons should be easy to fix, so it's disappointing to see so many new versions come and go with no improvement in these areas.

SolSuite Solitaire 2009 9.3

Version: 9.3

Already Among World's Best plus Regular Enhancements

Pros: Best card graphics, tons of games, lots of cool customization options, nice backgrounds, improved sounds, and now the already world-class game Help has been improved in 9.3 to allow direct feedback to TreeCardGames on specific features.

Cons: Agree with another reviewer that upgrade process for SolSuite and graphics packs seems more cumbersome than it should be.

SolSuite Solitaire 2009 9.2

Version: 9.2

Amazing - No More Tada!

Pros: Enough solitaire games and variations to last a lifetime with lots of beautifully rendered card sets to choose from in extra large sizes. Finally upgraded the sounds! New ribbon toolbar. More control over game functionality and interface options.

Cons: TreeCardGames seems to have walled themselves off from any customer contact (for support, feedback or questions).

The Best Browser Add-On

Pros: Easy to install. Integrates well with IE. Lots of customizable features. Once you start using IE7Pro , you may not want to use IE or any a browser without it.

Cons: There's no ChromePro (not yet anyway). Waaaah!
