Product: Version: beta 2

First Impression: *****

Pros: Microsoft continues to show interest in it's antispyware offerings.

Cons: I encountered the error "This software requires GDI+. Please load the Windows 2000 PreRequisite Pack" which was followed by "The wizard was interrupted before Windows Defender could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again". I ran Windows and Office Update. After trying to reinstall the Defender Beta 2 and getting the same GDI+ message, I searched Microsoft for "GDI+". Apparently, there is a buffer overrun vulnerability associated with a file called "gdiplus.dll" , to which Microsoft has issued a fix. I downloaded and ran the GDI+ Detection Tool, which reported that I am running Microsoft Software that may contain a vulnerability, and I am directed again to Microsoft to download the latest security updates, all of which must be done using the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. I mention this because I primarily use Netscape 8.1. Back at Microsoft, I am told how to update my computer with the JPEG processing (GDI+) security update. There is a link to Office Update which I select (again). I then select the option for users of Windows Versions other than Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 to scan my hard drive for offending programs that have this GDI+ vulnerability. After waiting for about 30 seconds, the webpage reports "We are sorry, but the tool did not work properly on your computer. Please try again later". I have tried repeatedly and always get the same result. All of this effort to install a Microsoft Defender Beta. I spent over an hour trying to determine if my system had a security hole, only to give up frustrated and confused. During the process I had uninstalled Antispyware Beta 1 because I thought there was a conflict. There was. I will not be reinstalling that program or any other Microsoft Beta again.

The fire seemed fake and the sound was irritating

Pros: The fireplace theme had a mild soothing effect. Installation and setup were very easy and included a few options that you can tinker with.

Cons: One problem with this screensaver and all of the others by Gelios is the size of the nagging reminder to register. We get the idea that we're supposed to eventually buy this product, but the reminder takes up the entire screen. The second problem is the looping fire sound effect. After listening to it a few times I had to shut it off because I heard the same snaps and pops in the same repeating interval. The sound is not reflecting what the flames are doing. There should have been 2 or three audio choices. The third thing that detracted from my enjoyment of this themed screensaver was that the fire didn't seem very real. A real fire in a fireplace sends up tiny burning embers and sparks. With all the activity in the looping soundtrak, the fire seemed like it was missing something. In another themed screensaver that Gelios has, the 3D Fish School, they went so far as to add plankton which were barely noticable. I felt there should have been more visual detail concerning the flames. When it comes to this fireplace, there are no floating embers, no relief from the looping soundtrack and no good reason to download this screensaver.

BitComet

Version: 0.60

MAKE BITCOMET YOUR BITTORRENT CLIENT!

Pros: This is what you've been looking for in a bittorrent client. I initially found this program to have a medium difficulty with regards to complexity. It's got a big list of full-sized features which include the ability to select just the files in the torrent you want, a web browser, links to common torrent sites, a chat interface, and a fix to the public DHT network bug. This last item seemed to upset a lot of other different bittorrent client users in version .60 because when a task was started, it defaulted to a private download. This is only an issue for users that frequent sites where tracking is involved. The DHT issue has been fixed with the release of version .61, which you can get directly from Bitcomet.com and you can d/l it as a torrent with the .59 or .60 versions. The Bitcomet client also doesn't take up a lot of system memory to do its job; it packs a lot of value into a small space. As with any bittorrent client, you should monitor the Task Manager cpu history and memory usage under a heavy load. Spikes hit upwards of 40% cpu usage and lows of 8%, but the cpu history stayed in the 25-35% range. Your individual results will vary. BTW, the program has no advertising or spyware. In short, the Bitcomet client, specifically version .61 which is available directly from Bitcomet.com, is the version that will restore everyone's confidance in the best full-featured client.

Cons: The biggest issue with the .60 version seems be the negative press it has received from other different bittorent client users regarding the public DHT network bug. Users that frequent torrent sites that feature tracking have reported being banned because they are using Bitcomet, which is unfortunate. As I said above, this has been fixed in version .61 which is available as a bittorrent directly from Bitcomet.com. Even though .60 is still a very good client, other different bittorrent users will see this version running under their peers tab and, because of this bad press about DHT in version .60, could ban Bitcomet users from that torrent. It's not right, but it has happened. Avoid this and get .61, which fixed the DHT issue altogether. It's a shame really, because this one issue has created a black mark on an otherwise spotless and reliable track record. One last item is that some users feel there should be additional torrent site links included with the client.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 7.289

FANTASTIC PRODUCT!

Pros: It's free, easy to install and use. It's a really great value for everyday computer users. The interface and features are very easy to use and understand. There are actually 2 free versions of AVG. The FREE version here at Download.com is somewhat limited in features yet it's powerful in execution and easy to use. The TRIAL version at Grisoft.com is fully featured but works for only 30 days. Even though the FREE version was released in December of 2004, it goes right to work updating itself and installing the latest program upgrades and virus signatures. For a free program to keep its functionality current is a true value. No cost, no headaches, no problems. BTW, there's a forum just for FREE version users that you can sign up for after you install that can be used for support.

Cons: Intel has recently purchased AVG and it will be interesting to see if the free updates continue; while this is not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, it does bring into question whether or not Intel will continue the free program updates and virus signatures. If you right-click on tabs in the menu, context sensitive help is disabled. Be prepared to wait while all of the updates are downloaded and installed. Expect a few features to be disabled. There is no way to automatically disable or adjust the 30 second wait that happens after every update or virus scan.
