Music

Before it was a phone it was our own personal music library. Whether you want to browse music or stream radio stations, these apps will help expand that library and discover new music you otherwise may never encounter.

    Songza

Following in the footsteps of Pandora, Songza offers its users free music as well as a recommendation service. Unlike the former, Songza's Concierge service takes a different approach to feed you music it thinks you want to hear. Music is chosen through predefined moods and activity. Audio selection can also be time dependent. Monday Morning will give lists of songs to sing to in the shower while Wednesday Night will feed you slow Jazz to unwind after a long, hard day. Songza's musical selections is a big hit with critics and users, alike, and the predefined mood can range from "Pool Party" to "Relaxing in a Coffee Shop." It's a great app to have on hand for that moment when you could use a pocket DJ.

    Hype Machine

For the more adventurous listeners who want to try something a little different, Hype Machine brings you its mobile app that lets you tap into the popular MP3 blog aggregator and discover new music from audio blogs around the Web. For a shiny penny, users can discover prereleased tracks, mash ups and remixes of all their favorites. Choose to hear from different channels based on popularity, new releases, or what your friends are listening to. You can also "Love" a song, which will add it to a playlist for later listening. The only downside is not being able to make multiple playlists, an issue that likely won't be addressed anytime soon due to the nature of the blog. The big upside? Tons of really interesting songs you might not hear elsewhere.
